Hi alltogether,

a customer of mine is planning a NetApp solution running NetApp Synchronous SnapMirror as DR / HA solution. I know it is offically not supported stated in the documentation.

But is only the snapmirror to the secondary system and restore from second system not possible? Or is the backup from primary storage snapshot and snapshot creation possible within NetApp Synchronous Mirror?

Thanks,

Dennis

Hey Dennis,

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/storage/storage_system_requirements.html?ver=120

NetApp Synchronous SnapMirror is not supported

In Veeam there is only support for tradional snapmirrors with mirror and/or vault policies.

Maybe you can run the snapmirror jobs nativ on ontap - i know it’s nice to orchestrate these things in veeam, but how often do you need this? I asume you also have a “backup” on a repository?

Regards

Matze

From everything I have read you cannot use Snapmirror for any backup and it requires policies on the array for replication of them.   Best to follow documentation or if you want a concrete answer open a support ticket.

Hi all,

thanks. The replication is done by NetApp, that is allright.

Question is if backup from storage ist still working and if snapshot creation on primary storage is possible.

Denis

Hi Denis,

i would say no - it’s not official supported - even if it works, dont use it.
Which protocol do you use for the datastores? Maybe you can switch transport mode to something without storage integration. DirectNFS oder DirectSAN? Even HotAdd or NBD can work depending on the number of VMs and the changerate.
