We have a request to restore approx. 900k files across 2 VM windows server using VBR V12. since selecting individual files is not practical. we are evaluation alternative approaches such as restoring parent directories, mounting restored VMDKs or using instant recovery. Looking for recommendations on the most efficient and reliable method along with any best practices for handling a restore of this scale.

Hi @dkumar,

instant disk recovery will in first phase only bring up disk on repository and point into VM

You will see files and copy data, but it will be slow

you can finish disk recovery with moving data from repository to hypervisor

after that speed will be fast

i don't see bigger impact on VM itself

its to complicated to restore disk on another server and then copy to original VM

Hi @dkumar , yes, that’s correct instant disk restore is best option from my point of view, because VM will be not restarted and vmdk restore is much faster than FLR.

Once restore is done, you can assign in disk management Letters for these disks and then you will copy files/directories inside of VM

Hi @dkumar -

I concur with Marcel and agree with your approach. Restoring so many files is indeed impractical. Just restore the disks to a VM & let users have access to retrieve the files/data they need. And using IR Disk Recovery is the way to go as it can be temporary if full restore isn't needed. Follow the Guide below to perform:

Best.

@coolsport00 @Marcel.K i am considering using instant disk recovery but would prefer not to mount the recovered VMDK on the original production file servers to avoid any potential impact on the running workload. what would be the recommended veeam best practice in this scenario? is it advisable to mount the recovered disk on a separate recovery VM and copy the data from there or is there a more efficient and supported approach. Basically, asked was to restore the files from multiple file shares to a dedicated share/drive.

Hi @dkumar -

Yes, that's what I would do...create a new VM & then attach these IR disks to it.... I assume these are data disks? So, you'd need to also install an OS as well on the new VM if these ir disks are data disks.

Also, keep in mind that we're not official Veeam Support. We're just users like you and only offer suggestions. For official Veeam Support I recommend you contact them to verify what we suggest.

Hope that helps.
