Data mobility has become a top priority for many organizations. Why? Because the cost of virtualization is rising quickly. VMware, Microsoft, and many HCI solutions have always carried a price, but recent changes have pushed those costs far beyond what most budgets anticipated.
Have we been accustomed to the historically low total cost of ownership for virtualization? Perhaps.
What is certain is that being vendor-flexible and infrastructure-mobile is now a financial necessity.
In this quick overview, we will show how Veeam + OOTBI can serve as your all-in-one solution for staying agile and in control.
As a bonus – I will be recovering directly to our Hyper-V Failover Cluster!
Here I have my Test Workstation from my VMware backups that I will be using instant recovery to convert the machine to a Hyper-V Clustered resource (role).

I have a lighter load on my Hyper-V Host 2 and want it to be restored as a cluster resource.

Here you can see I have a CSV (Cluster Shared Volume) from our SAN that I can target restoring this resource to.

Networking conversion made easy. Just select the virtual switch you would like to attach your VM to. In this case, I configured a Switch Embedded Team to act as redundant uplinks to our physical switch. On this, we are have our management network prepped and ready to go.

With a basic conversion like this – I won’t keep the VMware VM around so I am going to preserve the VM name. I will also not be performing any secure restore tasks.

Since this data mobility scenario is coming from Object First – Its no surprise that this purpose-built appliance can smash through an instant recovery task.

Now that we are mounted, its as easy as migrating it to production!

Downtime for the conversion – 10 Minutes. But fear not, you can do it in batches!
Now to switch gears to our Hyper-V Cluster. I can see that the VM is active, and the role is present.

The takeaway: Data mobility is critical in today’s IT landscape. This example highlights the value of investing in your backup infrastructure and using it as a strategic pivot point. Solutions like Veeam and Object First not only strengthen your backup environment but also provide a practical path to avoid vendor lock-in.
