Running Veeam B&R 11.0.1.1261 (11a? and fairly current)

I was advised by our veeam rep to use a backup copy job to accomplish what I was trying to do. Basically:

we have a daily backup job to disk with 60 days of restore points, and weekly full backups on Saturdays. I want to move a copy of ONLY the weekly full from this job to a different datastore that’s part of a scale-out repository, most specifically to use the backup copy job’s ability to apply GFS retention to what it’s copying

Unfortunately the scheduling options for the periodic backup copy job leave a lot to be desired.

The only option you have is “run this job every X days at Y time” - that’s it.

Considering that normal backup jobs get a wide variety of scheduling options (most importantly in this case “run on specific day of the weekor  “run after specific backup job”) it seems odd that none of these extremely useful options are available within backup copy jobs.

Instead the only option is “run every 7 days” which means I basically have to manually enable the backup copy job on Saturday, and then hope that no one ever disables it or does something that puts it off-schedule. If it somehow gets off-cycle and starts running every 7 days starting on a Sunday, since periodic only grabs the latest restore point it’s just going to be copying a random incremental instead of the standalone full from Saturday.

It would be super ideal in this case if I could simply say “run this backup copy job every Saturday at 10pm and only grab the latest restore point” or even “run immediately after this other job finishes”

Does that make sense, or am I just trying to use this feature in a dumb way?

Hi @Joewe

Feature requests should be created in our R&D forum.

For your request, wait for V12. There will be many changes to the periodic copy job schedule options. I‘m sure you will like them :)

or even “run immediately after this other job finishes”

This is already possible with the immediate copy job. This job type will always copy restore points right after they were created by the backup job.

Can already be done with Backup Copy Schedule window.  Just allow the periodic copy job to copy only on sunday and only one restore point will be copied

Your Veeam installation 11.0.1.1261 is V11a :)

But please check that you have installed the latest patch (P20220302). There was a critical security issue which we had closed.

Sorry about that! I googled like 3 different variations of “veeam feature request form” and the only results I was getting were for the community forum (and when you start typing “feature request” into the title it suggests dozens of similar posts, so i figured it was the right place).

That is interesting that limiting the window when it’s allowed to copy will effectively make it only run on certain days. I kind of assumed that if you were running the job every day but only allowing it to copy during a specific time frame, that it would just get clogged up and start trying to copy everything it had seen in the last 7 days during the first allowable window.

I’ll give the periodic copy on Saturday evenings a shot, thanks!
