Hi , we have just installed a new veeam server v 12.0.3 (Veeam Data Platform Essentials) and i have virtualized the old one with v11 enterprise lifetime license.

can we upgrade the v11 to v12 , using the license already used for the new one and creating a standby server in case a disaster strike on the new one by restoring the backup config of the new one?

the old one has sql server 2012 , new one i saw is postgres

if it is not possible can we install the free veeam backup server and when disaster strike , restore the backup from the new on v12 ? with this free veeam server can we balance the many veeam endpoint backup client deployed between the v12 licensed and the free one?

we have under maintenance and opened a case number: 07772524 but i get a reply from a technician that my request is out of scope….

Hi ​@tradexsrl,

You can simply install 2 VBR servers with v12.3.2 (the current version) and work with one and restore to the “standby” one (which is simply a “clean” and “empty” VBR server) when a disaster strikes.

 

You have to make sure that you are using the same Veeam version on both servers because otherwise you’ll get in trouble in case of a config restore.

As Lukas said same version and just store a copy of the Configuration Backup somewhere to access on the standby server for restore.

Yes only allowed 10 VM backups and it could not share the same database as the main VBR either.

I’m not sure if it’s an option for you, but a setup you could do is similar to what I have in my environment → I have a “main” VBR server in my DC1 site. I perform standard Veeam Backups with this VBR server. I have a whole separate VBR server in a secondary site (DC2). I use this 2nd VBR server to perform Veeam Replication to my DC2 where I have a site ready to go in case DC1 goes down. Or, if just 1 or a handful of VMs go down, I can just failover to those replicated VMs at DC2 using my DC2 VBR Server. Reason I do it this way is if DC1 goes down, having a 2nd VBR server offsite won’t matter because all your DC1 source VMs you backup are still down.

Now, if you’re just wanting a copy of your DC1 (main) VBR server just for recoverability in case something happens to just your VBR server, then having that 2nd VBR server like you’re wanting is fine. Just backup your DC1 VBR server often (config db backup) and, as Chris shared, make sure to put the backup file offsite; probably best to just put it in a folder on your 2nd VBR server. That way you just perform a restore of your config DB if needed and you’d be up and going pretty quickly.
