Confused about versions

Hi all,

We have been using veeam backup and replication for some time with no issues, test restores work every time. Our licence on B&R shows enterprise plus, and the package shows as essentials. We have always renewed through an MSP.

They have just quoted for renewal and i noticed the price had doubled and they had moved to monthly billing, so i queried it and was told they were offering a different package now called ‘Data platform advanced’ - hence the higher pricing.

I am a bit confused about what actual licence we need to carry on as we are with the software which we are happy with?

On the actual software the licence says ‘Edition enterprise plus, package essentials’

When logging into veeam the licences say we currently have ‘Veeam Data Platform Essentials Universal’

And our MSP want to sell us ‘Data platforms advanced’

Are ‘edition enterprise plus, package essentials’ and ‘veeam data platform essentials universal’ the same thing?

If i accept the MSP ofer of ‘data platforms advanced’ will it work with my current install of B&R or will i have to reinstall and reconfigure?

Thanks.

Yes, what you’re seeing does make sense. The Enterprise Plus, Package Essentials shown in your B&R console generally aligns with what Veeam now calls “Veeam Data Platform Essentials (Universal License)”, which uses the VUL model.

If your MSP is proposing Data Platform Advanced in most cases you won’t need to reinstall or reconfigure your VBRn server, you would simply apply the new license file.

However, it’s still worth confirming with your MSP or Veeam directly, because licensing conditions can vary depending on the contract, subscription type, and how the upgrade path is handled.

I’d recommend asking your MSP for the exact SKU of the license they’re quoting, so you can compare it with what you have today, and confirm whether the upgrade to Advanced requires any additional steps.

Glad to help! If you get the SKU details from your MSP and want a second opinion, feel free to share them here. Happy to assist.

Will do thanks, to be honest i am a bit confused as to why they want us to take advanced as we are a small company (15 VMs in total) so way under the 50 limit of essentials.

But they don't want to bill annually anymore, instead wanting to bill monthly, so perhaps that is why.

As an end user all i really care about is continuity. I have confidence in the product as i have tested it to death and i just dont want disruption

Thanks again.

Once you get the SKU from them, it will be much clearer. If they can still provide Essentials Universal, that would align perfectly with what you have today and avoid any unnecessary changes.

I am beginning to think the MSP doesnt want the business as they have replied

‘Veeam have advised the key will need to be re-installed in order to activate, so there will be a little config works for you to complete if proceeding with this option.’

Which is incredibly vague, i can re-enter a key obviously but they are talking about ‘config work being required’

There should be no technical re-config required as already mentioned. Might be that your MSP suggests update to a new Veeam version (e.g. from v12 to v13) - but I’d phrase that differently if I were them. :)
