Complex Domain controller

Scenario, a customer has a complex environment where their DC doesn’t have groups for servers, Laptops, Different users in different regions. Customer want to backup servers and endpoint but the laptop backup has different requirement. Let’s say Executive backup must backup the entire PC and other users you select a specific folder.

If you deploy backup protection group using CSV files, there is a lot of manual requirements if changes happen to that environment.

The question is how to use AD to create separate requirement even thou the DC is complex.

Basically yes - by putting them into different protection groups.

In the Agent job itself though, you can chose between “Workstation” and “Server” - but I’m sure this doesn’t help you here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/userguide/agent_job_protection_mode.html?ver=13

In order to use AD you still need to set up groups for Veeam when creating protection groups.  See here - https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/userguide/protection_group_add.html?ver=13

Hi,

Basically, I see a few options here:

Yes, you can work with CSVs, which is the approach you already declared as “too manual”. Second option is to convince the customer to work with AD groups to follow a certain design on protection groups. Third option would be - moving away from CSVs - to add the computers manually to the protection groups in Veeam. Yes, it is manually as well, but at least you don’t have to deal with CSVs and have the GUI available.

Best regards

Lukas

Since the DC complecated

can I do the following

Create group 1: All_Laptops

point to mix AD folder

exclude server OS, Do I have that option?

Create Group 2: All_servers

point to same AD folder

Exclude Workstation

is this position with veeam?

Protection Groups just group the machines, and it is during the Backup Job setup that you specify options.  You might not be able to get this granular though.

So you need to ensure the Protection Groups are how you want them for the backups - like laptops in one and Servers in another.

Is there a current veeam documentation to configure that way, Also let’s say a new worksatation is added, Is it possible to set up auto discovery to avoid manual intervention?

Here is the documentation for Protection Groups (all of it) - https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/userguide/protection_group_tasks.html?ver=13

Yes, the Protection Groups can do autodiscover to add new machines to them at scheduled intervals.  Then it will be added to the job automatically as well, provided the push of the agent works.

I would suggest some reading as that will answer most questions and then experiment within Veeam.
