Best Practice for restoring a backup from a NAS

Apologies if this is a frequently asked question, I’m very new to the topic of managing backup infrastructure.

I’m currently facing the following issue:

  • Server 1 is currently powered off and defective. According to users, there are important files that need to be extracted in some way. Server 1 was not centrally managed and instead had a standalone instance of Veeam Agent to run backups and copy backup files to NAS 1
  • NAS 1 holds a single full backup of Server 1 and is not managed via Veeam as a repository etc.
  • NAS 1 and Server 1 are physically located at an external location with a very slow internet connection; this was the reason why the standalone agent approach was chosen in the first place
  • Server 2 will host the restored files from the backup in the future and is managed centrally

What would be the best way to go about this restore process? My biggest issue is that I know how to restore files from existing centrally managed devices in our inventory but I have no idea what’s the “right” way to get the files off the NAS, mount the backup and extract the relevant files...

Thank you in advance for all your help. Some of the less optimal configurations (like the NAS only holding one backup) is unfortunately a result of bureaucracy and the company priotitizing saving money over stable infrastructure.

Hi @PaulPAS,

Basically you have many ways to restore data as long as you have access to the backup files.

You can just access the NAS (remotely or however) and copy the data to a managed repository (e.g. a Linux or Windows repository within Veeam), rescan the repo and get access to the backups as “imported” backups in the VBR (“central” Veeam).

You also could run through the “import backup” process which is my personal recommendation: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/userguide/importing_backups.html?ver=13

You need to have access to the backup file(s) either way.

Another option would be to just add the NAS as Veeam repository to your VBR infrastructure. I wouldn’t recommend this in the first place since you have a poor internet connection and you won’t have too many advantages imo. I assume that at some point you’ll continue using the NAS as local repo for the Agent based backup so I’d keep that architecture as it is.

Hope that helps!
