Backup TrueNas Core with Veeam Backup and Replication 12

Hi,

What data are you storing on the TrueNAS? Is it offering SMB/NFS or are you using it as iSCSI for virtual workloads? Are you trying to protect VMs or Containers running on the TrueNAS?

Oh sorry, I forgot some information in my topics.

My TrueNas only stores SMB and NFS files.

I already use a dedicated ESXi server that is backed up with my Veeam.

awesome, in which case yes you want to do unstructured data backup :)

To your original question, you’ll be adding a file share.

File Servers are when it’s a Windows or Linux server you can deploy Veeam components to. (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/adding_managed_server_file_share.html?ver=120 for more info)

NAS Filer is when it’s a compatible, typically enterprise storage system (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/adding_nas_filer.html?ver=120 for more info)

You can choose to add the root of the share to enumerate all the sub shares or split out more granularly if required :) more info here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/adding_file_share.html?ver=120

I set the file share to my TrueNas with Backup from a Microsoft VSS snapshot but I have this error :

10/3/2025 6:51:32 PM :: Processing \\NAS04\CIFS_TEST Error: Failed to add volume [\\NAS04\CIFS_TEST\] to the VSS snapshot set
The given shadow copy provider does not support shadow copying the specified volume.
--tr:Failed to add volumes to the snapshot set.
--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.  

Is it possible to backup from VSS snapshot with my TrueNas ?

Hi,

Veeam & TrueNAS haven’t validated integration with each other as an unstructured data backup. So this will all be best effort. 
 

Have you looked at how to enable VSS for SMB within TrueNAS? And made sure ZFS snapshot configurations are set up? I’ve not done this myself but making sure you’ve done the prerequisites to see if it could work

I tried to apply this https://www.truenas.com/docs/core/13.0/coretutorials/sharing/smb/shadowcopies/

I enabled Shadow copies on the Windows shares and I schedule Snapshot in tasks.

I see snapshot folder with all sub-folder of snashots when I browse in Windows explorer.

But in Veeam I must use Backup from a Microsoft VSS snapshot or Backup from a storage snapshot at the following path ?

I am not sure regarding twice features.
