Backup for Proxmox with PBS + VBR

Hi there Veeam community! Quick check if anyone has had a similiar scenario:

A Customer has a Proxmox Cluster consisting of three nodes. They have been using Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) and intend to use Veeam going forward (they still have an active license from a retired system). Now at the same time, they want to continue using PBS (because it has specific features they like and 2x the backups are better).

Question: Is there any chance of anything breaking or getting corrupted? I have had the same configuration running in our lab and it all went smoothly (of course the backups have to run at different times and not be allowed to interfere with each other). Any input would be highly valued!

Hi ​@Arctic,

As far as I know (someone please might correct me!) it is not generally forbidden to use two different backup software solutions.

 

You have to pay attention to the following:

  • make sure that network / firewall ports are different and cannot interfere
  • make sure to keep strict schedules to aviod both solutions running at the same time
  • make sure that you don’t share backup resources (such as storage systems as repository) since this is not supported
  • think about declaring RPOs and RTOs and calculate required compute and network performance

 

To be extra sure you could consider opening a support question / ticket to confirm.

Thank you for the feedback, those are all good points! I have already made it very clear to the customer that we have to make absolutely sure both systems don’t interfere with each other. I will launch a support ticket and update this post once I have an official answer.

I’m not sure how CBT behaves with Proxmox when 2 different applications access this information. At least with VMware it was possible to backup the same VM with multiple solutions. Besides that transaction log backup might become a problem, but as long as we don’t have application aware processing for Proxmox, that’s shouldn’t be something to worry about.

Besides that, what is your customer missing so that he wants to continue with PBS?
