AHV: Backup VM or Protection Domain Based?

Hi team

May I have your thoughts?
I would like to decide on what is most effective.

In the existing environment, AHV VM are backed up with VM based backup.
But the Nutanix cluster also has existing protection domains for off-site replication.

The new cluster will still have protection domains so I am wondering if I should back these up instead going forward and not do a VM based one. I believe this will be more effective

Cheers

Hi @gravelrider,

That strongly depends on your / your customers needs. Here’s an example:

In a “perfect world” you have certain RPOs and RTOs that you aim to fulfill with Veeam as data resilience tool. What that definitions you can decide if you go with VM-based backups or not.

If you protection domain design can fulfill your RPO / RTO requirements, you can chose that to have a lower workload maintaining the jobs in Veeam but in case you have different RTOs / RPOs for specific VMs that are in a single protection domain than you have to switch to VM-based backups.

Sorry to not point in a more targeted direction but hope that helps!

Best regards
