I will discuss the comparison of Veeam CDP feature and other CDP products, e.g. Dell EMC RecoverPoint for VMs and Zerto.

Dell EMC RecoverPoint for VMs 5.3

Installation and enabling CDP feature

Below figure is the infrastructure diagram for Dell EMC RecoverPoint for VMs across two sites.

  1. Dell EMC RecoverPoint for VMs OVA Deployment: We need to deploy vRPA VMs into the vSphere cluster, two vRPA VMs are recommended configuration (one vRPA VM is allocated into one vSphere host).
  2. Using the Deployer to deploy vRPA cluster (setup two nodes vRPA cluster), and install the splitter into each vSphere host.
  3. Set up the connection of vRPA cluster and vSphere cluster; configure the vCenter plugin and install the required licenses.
  4. Repeat the step 1 to 3 for remote site if necessary.
  5. In production site, set up the virtual machine protection with RPO settings (seconds).

Zerto 9

Installation and enabling CDP feature

Below figure is the infrastructure diagram for Zerto across two sites.

  1. Install Zerto Virtual Manager (ZVM) into the management host, and integrated with VMware vCenter server at both Protected Site and Recovery Site.
  2. Install the Virtual Replication Appliance (VRA) into each vSphere host. For example, if there are four ESXi hosts are running in the cluster, the VRA requires to install on these four ESXi hosts.
  3. Add the licenses into each ZVM and site pairing.
  4. Create the Zerto VPG (Virtual Protection Group) with RPO settings (seconds).

Veeam Backup and Replication v11

Installation and enabling CDP feature

Below figure is the infrastructure diagram for Veeam Backup and Replication v11 across two sites.

  1. Install the Veeam Backup & Replication into the backup server, and add the required licenses.
  2. Install CDP filter into the VMware ESXi cluster.
  3. Install CDP Proxy into the VMware ESXi cluster.
  4. Create the CDP policy with RPO settings for VMs.

Summary

According to above, we can see the high level installation and configuration of each product. Below table show the comparison of each product.

NOTE: The summary is based on my project experience, it is used for your reference only.

Hi. Nice comparison.

CDP Proxy is required to be installed into the VM cluster.

Isn’t it a bit misleading to say "It is NOT required to deploy any virtual machines into the vSphere cluster."?

@JChan2021For RecoverPoint for VMs and Zerto, we need to install the splitter virtual machines into each vSphere. For Veeam B&R, it only enable the feature of CDP Filter and CDP Proxy on each vSphere, it is not the virtual machine.
