Again a day late on this VTT question...sorry! (again 😂 ) But, we roll on…

For those new to the VMCE page, please hide your comment (guess). To do so → before typing your response, click the ellipsis icon on the far right of the format toolbar at the top in your comment box and select the Spoiler option. This will place a ‘hide comment’ text box in your comment box area. Click inside this hide comment text box and start typing your answer (guess). Be careful to not click outside of the box or your comment will show after saving. We want your comment to not show so others can take full advantage of these practice questions. Let me know if you have issues. Good luck!

A Veeam backup proxy is configured as follows.  No modifications are allowed to the transport mode.  When performing a restore of a thin-provisioned VMware virtual disk on an NFS datastore using this proxy server, which transport mode will be used?

Backup Transport Mode Options
  1. Direct SAN Access
  2. Direct NFS Access
  3. Network
  4. Virtual Appliance

Good question since it made me recheck my knowledge on directnfs. Thin restores are possible with directnfs so the answer is

b

  1. Direct NFS Access

However, I’d throw a caveat in there:

Do the Veeam proxies that are in use here have access to the NFS network?

If the NFS network is added by DNS entry to the ESXi hosts, does the Veeam proxy have proper DNS resolution to make that work?

If the answer is “No” to either of those, then “C. Network” is used.

If the proxy can access the NFS datastore, then i would say B (Direct NFS), otherwise C (Network).

Don’t read into the question what isn’t there….like the exam. It is what it is.

The answer to this week’s question is below. Did you get it correct?...or did you change your answer after some discussion/thought? 😉

Again, this question just tests your knowledge of requirements for restores using the 4 Transport Modes.  When using NFS, and specifically DirectSAN NFS, unlike DirectSAN, you are able to use this Transport Mode for restores for thin-provisioned disks. So b. Direct NFS Access is the correct answer here. You have to use thick disks for DirectSAN, otherwise either Network or Hotadd are the alternative restore Modes used.
