Onboarding for Veeam Data Platform - Step 2.3 Deployment options

Your Veeam Backup & Replication deployment can run on-premises or in private, public and hybrid-cloud environments. The prerequisites and how these components work for each environment are remarkably similar. IT organizations have the flexibility to choose from distinctive designs based on their current requirements.

  • On-premises deployments: an on-premises deployment can easily scale out from simple to additional installations.
  • Service providers deployments: Veeam Backup & Replication is employed by service providers who offer BaaS to their customers.
  • Cloud workload deployment: Veeam Backup & Replication can be deployed on a cloud VM and protect a wide variety of workloads.

NOTE: This is different from the cloud-native appliances that we have for AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Learn more about cloud-native architecture here.

Simple deployment

Simple deployment includes the installation of all components onto a single all-in-one server. This machine can be either virtual or physical. Specs should follow configuration maximums. In this scenario, all the major components (i.e., the server, proxy and repository) are installed on the same machine.

When planning to use Veeam Backup & Replication for a simple deployment, the backup server should be placed in the main data center alongside the infrastructure to be protected to leverage quick response times and local management traffic.

A simple deployment scales out by adding multiple repositories that are operated by the same built-in proxy server. Simple deployments are suitable for small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) that want to have a local backup copy of their Veeam Backup & Replication data on-premises. This applies to public cloud deployments like Azure Cloud, AWS and other offerings too. In this case, backup data can be stored on disk-/file-based repositories attached to the servers, as well as object storage repositories that sit in the public cloud and on-premises.

Advanced deployment

With the advanced deployment scenario, you can easily meet your current and future data protection requirements. You can expand your backup infrastructure horizontally in a matter of minutes to match the amount of data you want to process and available network throughput. Instead of increasing the number of backup servers or constantly tuning job scheduling, you can install multiple backup infrastructure components and distribute the backup workload among them. The installation process is fully automated, which simplifies deployment and maintenance of the backup infrastructure in your virtual environment.
