Calculators 1.2 released!

david.tosoff
Forum|alt.badge.img

Hello calculator users,

Today we have released version 1.2 of the Official Veeam Calculators!

Within this release we’ve added a FOUR new calculators to aid in sizing for:

  • 👥 Entra ID (Just released in Veeam Data Platform 12.3 last week!)
  • 🍃 MongoDB
  • 🖥️ Veeam Backup Server
  • 🔐 Veeam Data Cloud Vault (essentially streamlined version of the VM/Agent calc)

Read more on these new calcs below.

Also, watch this space, as there will be even more exciting news in 2025…

Cheers,

Veeam Calculators Team 🧮

--

Entra ID Calculator

Veeam Data Platform 12.3 brought with it new support for Microsoft Entra ID, so we followed suit to try to bring this to your hands as soon as we could.

Found under the SaaS category under the Entra ID tab, the new calculator takes two primary inputs:

  • Object count — how many users, groups, administrative units, roles, applications, and service principals...
  • Retention – how many days the data should be kept for.

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

MongoDB

We’ve had MongoDB in the product line since 12.2, and though we’re a bit behind adding it, we got there nonetheless!

The new MongoDB calc operates essentially similar to how the Veeam Agent calculator works, given the plugin operates essentially as a block-based backup.

You’ll find it under Data Center > Databases > MongoDB

Veeam Backup Server

So this one wasn’t really planned, but we needed to have an API for sizing Veeam Backup Servers for a **forthcoming project** (Stay tuned!)… And since we already had it built, we figured it was worthwhile to throw into the main simple Calculators.

This new calc allows you to estimate how to resource your Veeam Backup Server (management server) and database server resources.

It uses these elements as inputs:

  • The number of workloads the server will manage
  • Either of:
    • Average expected workloads that will be added to a job
      OR
    • Expected jobs that will run concurrently (at the same time) in the environment
(NOTE: These two values will adjust each other based on whichever is last edited)
  • And then, optionally, you can size for Enterprise Manager (and its config DB) by configuring the Indexing settings in the Retention card

Veeam Data Cloud Vault

And then lastly, but certainly not least(ly)… A new simplified Veeam Data Cloud Vault calculator!

This one is a streamlined version of the VM/Agent calcs intended to quickly setup the correct settings to get you some storage estimates for Vault.

Under the newly minted “Veeam Data Cloud” category in the Calculators menu bar, you’ll see the [currently] one-and-only item: Vault.

It takes two primary inputs:

  • How much data you need to backup (source data, keep in mind; not backup data!)
  • and, how long you want to keep the data for.
  • (NOTE: Like the other calcs, there is also an “Advanced” switch that allows you to override some of the defaults/assumptions, if you so need: Change Rate, Immutability Period, Capacity Tier move policy, and forecasting.)

The result is also simplified, showing two main scenarios:

  • What storage would look like if using Vault as a Performance Tier (i.e. for primary backups)
  • What storage would look like if using Vault as a Capacity Tier

That’s all for now. As with always, we love to hear your feedback on how we can make these tools even better. Otherwise, stay tuned & happy calculating!

Very nice work! And nice timing with the new features of v12.3 directly implemented into the calcs - good job!

I’m facing many new project in 2025 so I’ll share feedback aswell!

This information came at a good time, I have a VMCA course to be delivered and I will not be caught by surprise, although when we access the calculator, the message of a new version appears! Thanks for sharing!

HI All, now we have a Hands on Lab to practice how to size a VBR environment. available for partners.

I didn’t use it yet, hope to play next week.

Very interesting 🤔

Will need to check this out just to get an idea of sizing. Thanks for sharing.

Hi @AndrePulia that refers to VSE as the tool used in the HOL, which is now a legacy/deprecated tool. I’m sure the content can be translated to the new tools, but just wanted to make those reading this aware of that.

@david.tosoff You are abolutly right, I didn’t access the lab before, but I just access HoL and the VSE in fact is the calculator on it.

But the lab is very intereting, you can understand the scenario and use the requirements to learn how the things work.

Later today I’ll try to complete it and give more inforamtion.

Hello Guys,
I have a question, I m playing with the new calculator.
Here is my configuration

The result:

So I have to provide arount 15TB for my performance tier and around 14TB for the capacity tier 14TB
So in total near 30TB

But if I’m looking in the detail section

If I addition the performance tier I obtain : 10,4TB for the perf tier and 10,8 in capacity tier
So in total near 20 TB

I have a difference of 10TB !
Do you add the working space in the storage required ?

Hi, good day!
I would like to know how did you get the 10,4 TB and 10,8TB from the details part?

I simulated it here, and I do realize you did select ReFS or XFS, in my test, I select it and the repo for performance tier will be 10,8TB and for capacity tier will be 14,2 TB., see it

Hi @AndrePulia

I just added up each point without XFS or ReFS :

4*2 + 12*0,2 = 10,4 TB

It's strange, because the result details don't appear in my screen, can you send the screen with the data you filled in?

Hi Philippe, the reason is that capacity and restore points show 2 different things. One includes all required capacity whereas the other only shows the restorable points that will be stored.

Keep in mind that:

  1. We add overhead for “working space” on disk
  2. There is overhead for immutability on Object Storage

That is what accounts for your delta. We’ve had enough people confused by this that next release we will show these 2 things visually in the simulation as well.

Hi @Stabz, have a look:

Overheads now shown in 1.3.11 😊

Camille Iaropoli

thanks for displaying the overhead, but since the update we can see that the capacity tier volume has doubled (even if it’s a copy scenario), even though the restore points remain the same between perf tier and capacity tier. bug?

@Camille Iaropoli Can you please expand on this? I’m not able to see this behaviour.

Simple example here shows cap tier copy w/ 10TB source data @ 5%.
Values calculated match this output (15.3TB | 10TB)

By the way, in results we have 0TB on the perf tier vs. the right figure this morning. and the right volume only in detail

Hi David,

In the old calculator (RPC) we had to calculate the workloads individually when we had different needs and then we considered the largest area of working space, I would like to know if in the future the new calculator will have the option to export as CSV or in the calculator itself have the option to calculate different workloads.

I used to use this table after get the results from RPC
