How do I go about mounting a VBK file so I can browse it and pull out some files?

I have two large VBK files (> 10TB) and I need to browse one of them and pull out a few files.  I am having trouble doing that and I hope to learn from my post the best way to accomplish that.

What’s my best approach to this?

You don’t mount it but you can use the extractor utility found here - Veeam Backup & Replication Utilities 💪 | Veeam Community Resource Hub

Hi @On-Site -

You can review the process from the Guide:

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/importing_backups.html?ver=120

The link is old from v10 but the utility is in the program files directory for Veeam.

Ah yes import does work as well.  I was thinking extract to get the files.  😋

I think that’ll work too. I always forget about that utility 😊

Chris: The Extractor tool will pull out raw VMDK/VHDX files, these would then need transportation manually to the hypervisor etc. It’s not the right scenario here as it will also ‘balloon’ any thin provisioned virtual disks.

So “no” to Extact utility Chris suggested @haslund  ? (I suggested to Import into VBR)

Ah yes that is true so the import option would be the better one here to browse the files within.  Forgot about that part.  Thanks Rasmus.  😁

This is the better option I think Shane since you can browse the files like the OP wants.  I jumped too quick with extractor.  LOL

Ah ok...got it.

Correct, unless the raw virtual disks is what is needed.

The right process would be to do exactly as you suggested @coolsport00, import the backups (as Shane documented), then perform restore or manually extract using the Backup Browser: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/multios_restore_launch_vm.html?ver=120

Understood. 😊

So, using the import function, I receive an error that Veeam is unable to parse the summary.xml file due to data corruption.

Now, I know what data corruption is, but obviously, I need to recover the data, so….suggestions?

And by the way, I appreciate the REALLY fast responses!

There is a possibility that the VBK file is corrupted so Veeam cannot read it.  If you really need to get files out of this VBK then I might suggest a Support ticket to have them assist.

are you importing using the .vbm or the .vbk?

From what I can see from searching the way to address this was with Support.  So this is probably the best route to take at this point.

Saw this Forums post from a couple yrs ago. You may be out of luck to restore.

A PM there recommended to contact Support. See if they can help you out.
