Here's how to access and interpret backup logs to ensure your system is running smoothly.

Steps to View Backup Logs in Veeam Data Cloud

To get started with viewing backup logs, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Backup Policies Section
    • From the main menu, click on Backup Policies.
  2. Select a Specific Backup Policy
    • If you have multiple backup policies, click on the name of the policy under the Name field in the table to view more details.
  3. Access the Backup Sessions
    • On the Backup Policies page, Veeam Data Cloud will show a list of backup sessions in the Backup Sessions section, sorted in descending order (most recent to oldest).
  4. View the Backup Logs
    • To view the logs for a specific session, click the View logs button (the eye symbol) in the Actions column next to the desired backup session. The Session logs drawer will appear on the right side of the screen.
  5. Download the Logs (Optional)
    • If you need to save the session logs locally, click the Download logs button in the Actions column. This will export the logs as a .CSV file to your computer.

Filtering and Customizing Backup Logs

Once you open the session logs, Veeam Data Cloud offers several options for filtering and customizing the displayed information:

  • Filter by Status
    • Use the All statuses drop-down menu to filter logs based on specific session statuses such as:
      • Running: The backup session is in progress.
      • Success: The backup session was completed without issues.
      • Warning: The backup session completed, but with warnings (the session may still be successful).
      • Error: The backup session failed due to errors.
  • Search Logs
    • To find specific entries in the logs, type a keyword or phrase in the search field and press Enter.
  • Local Time vs. UTC
    • Toggle the Local time switch to view timestamps in your local time zone, or choose UTC for universal time reference.
  • Show Timestamps
    • If you want to include timestamps for each log entry, check the Show timestamps box.
  • Export to CSV
    • To create a local copy of the logs, click on Export to CSV. This is helpful for offline analysis or record-keeping.

Understanding Backup Session Statuses

The Backup Sessions section provides detailed session statuses, which can help you assess the overall health of your backup operations. Here are the common statuses you may encounter:

  1. Success
    • The backup session completed successfully without any issues.
  2. Warning
    • The backup session completed successfully, but with some warnings. These warnings can range from informational messages to alerts that require attention. For example, you might see a warning indicating that certain files were not backed up due to an issue with Microsoft 365 services or a virus detected in a file.
  3. Failed
    • The session encountered errors and was unable to complete successfully. You should review the session logs to identify the cause of the failure and take corrective actions.
  4. Stopped
    • The backup session was manually stopped or halted due to an external factor, such as user intervention.
  5. Running
    • The backup session is currently in progress and hasn’t completed yet.
  6. Disconnected
    • The session was disconnected due to network issues, configuration errors, or service disruptions.
  7. Not Configured
    • The backup session wasn’t properly configured (missing backup targets or resources).
  8. Queued
    • The backup session is in the queue, waiting to start.
  9. Retry
    • The backup session was retried due to warnings or errors in the initial run, attempting to resolve issues.

Understanding Warning Messages

Sometimes, you may encounter warning messages in the logs that don't necessarily indicate failure but still require attention. Here are some examples:

  • OneDrive: OneDrive Was Not Found
    • This message could indicate that OneDrive couldn’t be located during the backup. It might not be an issue, but it’s important to verify the configuration.
  • Virus Found in SharePoint or OneDrive Files
    • If a virus scanner detects a virus in a file stored in SharePoint or OneDrive, it will trigger a warning. This doesn’t mean the backup failed, but the file may have been flagged by Microsoft’s built-in virus scanner.
  • Outlook: Failed to Find Group Owner
    • This warning suggests that there was an issue with finding the group owner for a backup, potentially affecting the integrity of the backup for specific Outlook data.

By reviewing these warning messages, you can decide whether further action is needed or if they can be safely ignored.

Viewing and analyzing backup logs in Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 is a straightforward process that provides vital information about your backup sessions. Whether you’re troubleshooting a failed session or simply keeping an eye on backup health, the session logs offer the transparency and detail you need to maintain a secure and efficient backup process.
