Hi, does Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 require a Veeam Cloud Connect licence per customer when backing up from Azure to a remote (non-Microsoft) data centre?  Thanks, Nick

Hello Nick, Are you Service Provider or are you using the Backup as a service from a cloud provider ? Each User must haves Veeam Backup for M365 licence to be backup.

Hi Nick,

When you are not a VCSP (Veeam Cloud Service Provider) then you just need a Veeam Backup for M365 License (usually a subscription model), otherwise you can take VCSP licenses (based on license points). These are 2 different models / approaches.

Please keep in mind that it doen’t matter where you store the backup data (that doen’t affect the Veeam license at all) but you can only copy data to S3 object storages or local disks of the Veeam M365 server.

Best

Lukas

Hi Stabz, we are a service provider.  We use pay as you go for Veeam Backup for M365 to back up our customers’ M365 domains.  I want to know whether we need Veeam Cloud Connect too - I think we used to but either it has changed or I am mistaken.

I found this, which I think means I don’t need VCC for M365 users, but wanted to check:

The Veeam Cloud Connect license is consumed by protected workloads. A protected workload is a virtual or physical machine that has at least one restore point created by a tenant in the past 31 days.

As service provider you have probably install a Veeam Backup for M365 (VBM) on your infrastructure, this VBM needs a licence to backup Exchange/SP/OD/Teams.

This licence should be generate on your Veeam VCSP Pulse, you have to estimate how many users to protect and create an Veeam for M365 licence for X users.

If you are using this VBM to backup multiple organizations you will have to update this Licence key.

Thanks - yes, that’s all in place.  It’s just the question of whether VCC is needed and I now realise it’s not as it’s only for VMs or physical servers, not individual M365 users or cohorts of M365 users.

VBO needs its own server and is separate to Cloud Connect. We have both a cloud connect deployment and VBO.

These are linked to VSPC and licensing done via pulse. For VBO its done on licensed user.

You will need a Veeam Cloud Connect Licence for this types of workload:

  • Backup VM
  • Public Cloud Database
  • Public Cloud Fileshare
  • Public Cloud VM
  • Replica VM
  • Server
  • Workstation

Thanks for clarifying and for speed of response!
