Hello Team,

Greetings!

The option mentioned in below link:

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/file_share_backup_job_secondary_target.html?ver=110

Is this only applicable for Veeam backed up VMs and we cannot use the secondary target for having a duplicate copy of replicated VMs correct?

Thanks in advance!

Exactly, if you want to do replica of VMs, this is the solution:

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/replication.html?ver=110

Correct @RaviKumarS

You’d need to create a second replication job, as the secondary destination is effectively a backup copy job, but when you’re creating replicas, they’re not backups, therefore no backup copies could be created.

One thing you can do to avoid excessive VM snapshots & stuns in your environment if you want to create a secondary replica, is you can use a backup job as the source of your replica.

I believe this is the functionality you’re after 🙂

Thanks @marcofabbri - We are already doing replication, just wanted to know if the replicas can be stored in different target as secondary replica.

Thanks @MicoolPaul - will go through the link provided!

@MicoolPaul - So right now the scenario is - Customer is doing backup of VMs, as well as replication of VMs.

So we can create secondary storage target as per this link for VMs that are getting backed up - https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/file_share_backup_job_secondary_target.html?ver=110

And use this as source for replica if needed correct?

@RaviKumarS ok :)

Yes, as reported here, you can use backup as source for replica:

  • Replica from backup uses a backup chain in a backup repository as the only source of data. When building a new VM replica restore point, Veeam Backup & Replication always reads data from the latest restore point in the backup chain, either full or incremental. The backup chain in the backup repository may be created with a backup job or a backup copy job.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/replica_from_backup.html?ver=110

but this has some limitations:

Yep that’s absolutely fine, backup copy to a near location for your secondary replicas and then replication with that repository as a source 🙂
