Failed to modify guest OS settings hyper-v

Userlevel 3

Hello,
I'm posting for the first time.
Here is my production configuration: Windows server 2019 on an Intel 10900KF platform in Raid 1.
I create my image with Veeam Agent for windows (6.0.2.1090)
on a USB HDD. everything works fine
Then I want to remount my Veeam backup on a test server.
Installation on a test server Intel 12100 platform in non-raid, Veeam B&R 12.1.0.21.31 installation, Hyper-v role installation.
When I want to do an instant recovery of my Veeam backup,
here's the error message :
Failed to modify guest OS settings
A 'System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException' has been thrown

here's the screenshot

Thanks in advance for your help

I’m having the same issue after upgrading from 12.x to 12.1.  “Failed to modify guest OS settings”.

Did you open a Support case to have them check things for you?

Hi,

we have the same issue after an upgrade from Veeam B&R version 11 to 12 in December 2023.

With version 11 instant recovery worked fine. A full restore takes to much time and is no solution for us.

Any ideas?

Thx & rgds

Hello @actualc,
just to make sure I have understood your scenario correct:

  • you have backed up a physical Windows server with the Veeam Agentfor Windows and want to restore it as a VM with a VBR server?
  • your Agent ran in standalone mode or controlled from the VBR server?

What I see is that your Veeam Agent for Windows is not on the last version (6.0.3).

Did you try to boot the VM with the Veeam Recovery Media and restore the backup from there?

Userlevel 3

hello @Chris.Childerhose

both server versions are in 2019.
hyper-v version is 10.0.17763.1

hello @JMeixner

I did a test restore from Veeam Recovery Media
it's OK, the restore is good

What version of Hyper-V is installed on the system you are restoring from?  Is the OS the same as the one backups up - Win2019?  That can cause issues from what I am reading here - Before You Begin - User Guide for Microsoft Hyper-V (veeam.com)

The only other thing I can think of is to check the logs here - C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup

Otherwise, you might need to use the recovery media for this restore or worse case open a Support ticket to get assistance.

Great, @Andreas Link ! 😀

  • SureBackup jobs using Hyper-V-based virtual labs fail to process agent backups, displaying the error:
Exception of type 'System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException' was thrown
