I have a strange issue and have been trying to solve it for a few days now.  Fresh install of Veeam Backup 12 for the purpose of migrating a few dev/test VMs from one ESXi server to another.  The install went proper, I created a Ubuntu 24 server on each ESXi server and installed the backup proxy components via the GUI in VBR which registered them there.  Since this is more of a migration project, there isn’t a need for a separate backup repository.  When creating a quick migration job, everything goes well until the backup proxy selection.  The only Backup Proxy that is available is the VBR server and not the actual proxy servers themselves.  Since the migration job is having to use the VBR server as the proxy, the performance is horrid.  I have performed:

-repair on VBR 12

-reconfigured the proxy servers from VBR GUI (no errors)

-proxy servers are on same VLAN as VBR server so no firewall challenges

Any thoughts on what I have missed?  Thank you all

Hi @beenydu -

Veeam has a pretty extensive KB on troubleshooting hotadd proxies and why ones you create may/may not be used.

https://www.veeam.com/kb1054

and

https://www.veeam.com/kb1184

A couple keys to be aware of → make sure the VM Proxies are added in Veeam. You add them 1st as Managed Servers then add them as a Proxy. You didn’t say you did that explicitly and I don’t wanna assume you did so. I understand you’re using the Ubuntu VMs also as Repos? That should be fine.

Another thing to be aware of is make sure the Ubuntu VMs don’t use IDE disks. Also, make sure the hotadd VMs are in the same Cluster as the source VMs you’re wanting to backup because the hostadd VMs need to have access to those source disks they’re backing up. As a test, also deselect using ‘automatic’ Proxy selection in your job and add all your Ubuntu VM hotadd Proxies and DESELECT using the VBR server. Hopefully should force Veeam to use your Ubuntu VMs.

Try those things and let me know how it goes.

Thank you @coolsport00!  I ended up removing the proxy servers completely from the GUI, and adding them back based on your instructions.  I realized my mistake when adding them back in.  When creating the backup proxy, I selected “general purpose” out of haste instead of VMWare.  Now they appear for selection in backup jobs and migration.  The additional speed is nice too :)  Thanks again for the prompt help.  Many Blessings!

Ahh….yes! I have actually done that once myself. Glad I could help 😊
