Today, I have a tale to share regarding our work.

Oldest Backup Tool (Windows 2000)

will take you back in time, not too far, to when an IT administrator was given a set of tasks that focused on backups. It was a relatively straightforward assignment, and thus, the role of the backup administrator came into existence.

The main duty of these administrators was to ensure the secure and efficient storage of vital data. They created backups that could be relied upon in case of any data loss or system failures. During the early 2000s, backup administrators typically dealt with on-premise solutions, managing tapes, disks, and NAS devices.

However, as technology progressed, backup administrators faced new challenges and opportunities. The emergence of various technologies, such as cloud computing, the exponential growth of data, and the rise of cybersecurity concerns, marked a significant shift in the industry.

Backup administrators found themselves navigating a changing landscape where traditional on-premise solutions were increasingly complemented, and sometimes even replaced, by cloud-based alternatives. The sheer amount of information generated by both businesses and individuals demanded the implementation of more advanced backup strategies. This led to the birth of incremental backups, deduplication techniques, and the exploration of cutting-edge technologies to optimize storage and accelerate recovery times.

Moreover, the rise of cybersecurity threats played a crucial role in shaping the responsibilities of backup administrators.

With a heightened focus on cybersecurity, administrators have emerged as key players in safeguarding an organization's data. They prioritize secure backup systems and implement comprehensive recovery plans to combat attacks and potential disasters. In order to handle the growing volume of data, automation has become a crucial tool for backup administrators. Streamlining routine tasks, enhancing efficiency, and minimizing human errors are the advantages it brings. The shift towards hybrid and multi-cloud environments has introduced new challenges, such as orchestrating backups across diverse platforms and ensuring seamless integration between on-premise infrastructure and cloud services. Reflecting on the past decade, the role of a backup administrator has transformed from a storage-centric position to a multifaceted role encompassing cloud expertise, cybersecurity vigilance, and proficiency in automation technologies. As technology continues to advance, the backup administrator's role will continuously adapt to meet the evolving landscape of data management and protection. Considering these developments, one question arises: Have you ever felt like a superhero in your work?

 Naofumi Iwatani

I have developed an appreciation for a light novel series manga called "The Rising of the Shield Hero". In this stage of my career, I find myself relating to the protagonist, Naofumi Iwatani, a university student who is considered a failure. One day, while reading a book about four heroes, Naofumi is unexpectedly transported to another world. Alongside three other boys, he is chosen to become one of the new heroes tasked with saving this world from destruction caused by the recurring appearances of monsters and demons known as Waves.

Interestingly, each hero is bestowed with a legendary weapon. The Hero of the Spear wields a spear, the Hero of the Sword carries a sword, and the Hero of the Arch possesses a bow. As for Naofumi, he is given the weakest weapon of them all - a Shield.

The complexity of our mission requires us to exert all of our strength in order to acquire comprehensive knowledge about backup sources, their strategies, and their vulnerabilities. We must also find ways to enhance the power of our shield, transforming it into our most formidable weapon - the Recovery Shield. This shield serves as our last line of defense, safeguarding our precious backup data.

Our contribution is increasingly vital in safeguarding data and fortifying a company's IT system. The shield protection we offer through backup software and various security measures defends against external threats, prevents data loss (even unintended), and ensures the smooth functioning of backups.

Do you have a hero that you feel a connection to in your work?

Good job....heroes

I remember windows backup 😁 I used that on Windows NT 4 (the NT stood for New Technology… :) ). Of course that is probably the oldest windows backup. For me rsync was my oldest. I can’t remember but I was also leveraging Bacula in FreeBSD years ago might have been before that.
