Hello,

In my home lab, the backup repository, running on windows server 2022, using REFS, using V: drive letter
VBR is running in a VM on that same server, also on V: drive letter.

If that server died, then i have lost all my backups, .vbm|.vib|.vbk
Sure, I use backup copy jobs but those are stored off-site , but for the sake of this topic, I want to ignore that.
If i had a disaster i would have to download the backup files or do an instant restore over slow internet.

So I want/need to backup the OS, the c: drive.
Can i use that VBR to do it or what do you suggest?

Thanks much, David

Yes you can use VBR to back up just the OS drive and exclude the other repository drive if you like.

See here for exclusions - Step 4. Exclude Objects from Backup Job - User Guide for VMware vSphere (veeam.com)

So, your OS files and folders (Windows, Users, ProgramData, etc) is on C:, but you changed the Veeam install to install on your “data” drive (V:)? And, your backup files are also on V:?

But, you say you’re wanting to backup the VBR VM? You could use Veeam to backup the VM and exclude the V: drive, yes. You could then restore the VM at the point of the last backup. Another option would be to have a VM ready (like, a Template), have your Veeam run occasional Configuration Database backups stored on your V: drive (or some other drive...even a USB drive), then if your VM crashes, you could recreate it from the Template, then do a Veeam Configuration Database migrate operation.

Sorry, Please let me better explain.

There is only a single physical server
C: run windows server 2022 and nothing else.
V: using REFS, has the following:
1. the VM running VBR. note: I am not asking about the VM, not asking about VBR.
2. the backup repositories.

So if something happens to the OS/C:, if cannot boot, etc. then I cannot access the backup repositories.

How do I protect against that?
1. Use VBR to backup the OS of the physical machine?
2. install standalone VAgent
3. or what do the experts suggest?

Thanks much,
David

You can use either VBR or Agent to back up the Physical box - if this is a VM then use VBR.  Otherwise I would suggest the Agent install and create the bootable ISO file to keep safe somewhere in case of recovery.

If phsyical and you prefer it be virtual you can do a P2V as well for another option.
