We are using azure blob storage with immutable as our Veeam backup immutable backup. (Directly to azure with immutable). now, we are using azure export the blob storage to azure data box. Can we restore the data from there?

From Veeam article, Veeam mentioned that “You cannot offload immutable data to the Azure Data Box Device”.https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/data_box_seeding.html?ver=120#preparing-azure-data-box-for-shipping

I just want to confirm that this article referencing Azure Data Box as a target inside the Veeam software. Once the data is produced by Veeam you can copy it anywhere? or we can't copy to other place

Export data from our repository on Azure Blob immutable storage, get the Azure databox shipped to us, and then restore from the data box

Hi @Nikks,

I see different challenges here:

First: You have to keep in mind that the native copy of Blob files to Azure Data Box might be possible (not 100% sure about that because the immutable files do of course have the immutable flag set, you in case that works you can only copy, but never move since object cannot be deleted) but you will have to import the files into Veeam. When it comes to access and authentication a cloud repository (as Azure Blob is for VBR) work different than block storages or on-prem object storages so you will face the issue that you have to let Veeam know that the immutable blob files are now on an on-prem storage - doen’t work in my opinion (as per Veeam definition you already mentioned above).

Second: Please see this: Azure Data Box limits | Microsoft Learn

My time of Microsoft skills is a little in the past but I’m certainly sure that you might run into limitations when it comes to immutable data portability.

Third: Please keep in mind that in case you see the whole “disaster and recovery” stack you might have the requirement to create backups even if you are running in “DR mode” which means that you are using the Azure Data Box as on-prem (just pretend that works). Please spare some time to think about the situation how to failback the scenarios and how to merge data - this will be a third challenge.

Hope that gives a first hint. Maybe someone had this case already and is willing to share experience.

Cheers!

Lukas
