Is there any proprietary distribution that should be used to create an immutable volume? I would like to use the CENTOS distribution, is it possible to use it or is it not compatible, what do you recommend?

Check the following website as a guide - System Requirements - User Guide for VMware vSphere (veeam.com) - Under “Backup Repository”

CentOS 7.x x64 is supported as a backup repository, but not supported for XFS fast clone.

Personally, I have not used CentOS for a backup repository - but have had great experiences with Ubuntu and Redhat.  I’m sure CentOS will be no different!

Veeam supportes a range of Linux distributions, but CentOS is only supported in version 7. The successor CentOS Stream is not officially supported, and, while it would probably still work, I wouldn’t go with Stream because of it’s update/lifecycle policy.

In addition to immutability you will probably also want the XFS integration, so the following distributions would be supported by Veeam:

For advanced XFS integration (fast clone), only the following 64-bit Linux distributions are supported:

  • Debian 10.x, and 11
  • RHEL 8.2 to 9.1
  • SLES 15 SP2, SP3, SP4
  • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, 22.04 LTS

For all other distributions besides those above, the XFS integration support is experimental.

If you don’t need to go with a RHEL based distribution, then I would suggest to look at Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. You get a very long lifecycle and it’s commonly used for Linux based repositories.
