This is a successful case of Veritas NetBackup (NBU) replacement, which I completed in November 2025.

NBU Environment:

Proposed Veeam Environment

Requirements

  1. Replace the existing Veritas NetBackup (NBU) appliance.
  2. Ensure two data copies are stored at separate sites.
  3. Achieve a deduplication ratio of 1:10 or higher.
  4. Support VMware and China-brand hypervisors.
  5. Due to the WAN link speed being around 5xx Mbps, the data replication speed between the two sites is minimized.
  6. Minimize the amount of new backup hardware at the remote site.

High-Level Solution Design

  • HQ Site: Veeam Data Platform v12 deployed on a physical server, with a Huawei OceanProtect X6000 appliance acting as the Veeam repository.

  • Remote Site: Veeam Data Platform v12 deployed on a virtual machine, with a Huawei OceanProtect X3000 appliance acting as the Veeam repository.

  • Enable deduplication on the Huawei OceanProtect X6000 and X3000 appliances.

  • Use Veeam replication between the two sites.

  • Use Veeam agent-based backups for China-brand hypervisors.

  • Use Veeam proxy servers to manage and control different workloads

  • Upgrade the Veeam license to the Advanced edition if necessary.

I hope the above information is helpful for your reference.
