Thought I’d quickly post this to end the week.

Our current backup strategy utilises a virtual tape library with GFS with tapes periodically expiring after a set retention period. When tapes are archived to the vault, even though they will expire, the data is still recoverable when the tape is retrieved.

Anyway, we needed to recover a folder that our user remembers working on quite a long time ago but was no longer able to find it. A quick look on the Veeam B&R Tape Infrastructure tab to determine which tapes were required, perform retrieval, import the tape, retrieve the data and folder recovered. Could not be simpler.

Have a good weekend!

Successfully restoring files sure gives a good feeling 😊

@dips  Just wondering what the reasons are for using a VTL?

It’s a legacy setup. Hindered as there are a lot of tapes stored so to retrieve them and move the data into something like Object Storage is going to be quite cost-prohibitive and going to take a long time. Might have to perform a cut off at some point.

Tape delivers again. Nice one @dips !

Awesome…..I hope to plan some tape restores in two weeks!

Yes, data is available on the tapes until the tape is overwritten. The retention time does not matter,  the tape is marked Expired after the retention time is over only and the references are kept in the database.

Great to hear recovery was possible with Veeam. 😎
