Linux boxes still end up doing a lot of the jobs nobody wants to virtualize.
File servers. Monitoring nodes. Database hosts. NTP servers. Application servers that got built once and never moved again. They are everywhere in Veeam environments, but the Linux Agent still gets less attention than the Windows one. That matters, because some of the things that are easy to gloss over on Windows become real design choices on Linux.
This is the part that actually matters in practice: how you deploy the agent, when the kernel module is worth the effort, where nosnap makes sense, how protection groups really behave in VBR, what LVM snapshot space does to your backup success rate, and what bare metal recovery looks like when you have to do it for real.
Start with the deployment mode, because it changes everything after that
Veeam Agent for Linux can run in three modes, and the wrong choice here creates pain later.
Standalone mode is managed locally on the server itself through the CLI or ncurses interface. That works for isolated systems or small edge environments that cannot reach VBR. It does not work well for anything you actively want to monitor from a central backup platform.
VBR-managed mode is the one most infrastructure teams should use. Policy lives in VBR. Jobs are visible in the console. Protection groups work the way you expect. Backup copy workflows and central job visibility are there.
VSPC-managed mode matters when the environment is tenant-based and the backup design has to support visibility, billing, and service-provider style separation.
My bias is simple: if the server matters and it can talk to VBR, do not leave it in standalone mode. A standalone agent is easy to forget until the day you actually need a restore.
The biggest Linux-Agent decision is not the backup job. It is the package choice.
This is the one that affects almost every other part of the deployment.
Veeam ships two Linux agent approaches: the standard package with the kernel module, and the veeam-nosnap package.
The kernel-module path is the one you want when the server can support it. That gives you RAM-based CBT, volume-level image backup across supported filesystems, faster incrementals after the first full, LVM snapshot support, and full bare metal recovery through Veeam recovery media.
nosnap exists for the environments where the normal module path is not realistic: cluster nodes with conflicting snapshot drivers, locked-down systems, security policies that will not allow kernel headers or build tooling, or hosts where the module collides with other software. It works, but it comes with a real price. No CBT means slower incrementals and more I/O. Snapshot-less mode also limits what happens on filesystems that are not backed by LVM or BTRFS in a way Veeam can work with cleanly.
So the short version is this: use the kernel-module package wherever you can. Use nosnap where you have to, not because it looks simpler on day one.
Then there is the second layer: veeamsnap versus blksnap
Once you commit to the kernel-module path, the next question is which module you are actually dealing with.
veeamsnap is the older module. It covers older kernels and is still part of the story for systems that live below the newer kernel bands. blksnap is the newer path and is where development has moved. On overlapping kernel ranges, blksnap is the better answer because veeamsnap is not where future effort is going.
If VBR is deploying the agent through a protection group, it handles that decision for you. If you are installing manually, you need to care which module your distro and kernel combination will end up using. That is one of the reasons the compatibility reference matters so much for Linux, because the right answer changes with kernel version and whether prebuilt or DKMS packages are in play.
That is also where old third-party snapshot drivers become a mess. Datto remnants are the one that shows up a lot. When those are still installed, the failure can look like a broken Veeam package even though the real issue is a module conflict underneath.
Secure Boot changes the recovery story too
This is another Linux-specific branch people underestimate.
If Secure Boot is enabled, kernel modules have to be signed by a key the firmware trusts. That means you are not just installing Veeam and moving on. You have a key-enrollment step, a reboot, and an approval step during boot.
It also affects recovery media. Once Secure Boot is in the picture, the bare metal recovery options narrow. The prebuilt Veeam ISO becomes the path you plan around. That is worth knowing before the day you need it, not during the day you are trying to get a dead server back.
In VBR-managed environments, protection groups are the real control point
When Linux agents are managed through VBR, protection groups are the thing that actually shapes the deployment.
You can do individual computers for small static server lists. You can use an AD OU if the Linux systems are joined and discovered that way. You can use a CSV if your inventory lives outside of AD. And you can use pre-installed agents when the server has to call home instead of letting VBR deploy over SSH.
That last one is where people sometimes make the wrong assumption. Pre-installed agent groups are not equivalent to the other group types for centralized policy behavior. They are useful for getting self-registered systems into VBR, but they are not the cleanest answer when the goal is policy-driven, auto-deployed coverage. If you want centralized assignment and cleaner automation, the other protection group types are stronger.
SSH access and sudo are usually where deployment friction starts
Linux agent deployment through VBR depends on SSH. That part is obvious. The less obvious part is that the cleanest deployment model at scale is not just use root.
A dedicated service account with tightly scoped NOPASSWD sudo for the commands Veeam actually needs is a much cleaner pattern. It is easier to explain to a security team, easier to audit, and easier to keep consistent when the number of servers grows.
That is one of those design choices that feels like overkill for five servers and feels smart for fifty.
LVM snapshot space is where a lot of first backups die
Most production Linux servers in this conversation are using LVM, which means snapshot space is not just a nice detail. It is a hard requirement.
When the job runs, Veeam creates an LVM snapshot for the logical volumes it is protecting. That snapshot needs free extents in the volume group. If the volume group is already fully allocated, the job does not politely adapt. It fails.
That failure happens during the backup, not before it. Veeam is not going to save you by warning early enough if the free extents are not there. That is why checking vgs and lvs before rollout matters. The space-planning guideline in the docs is a useful baseline, but for high-write systems like databases I would plan more aggressively than the lowest published number.
This is one of the most Linux-specific looks fine until it does not problems in the product.
CBT is fast, but it is not persistent across reboots
The kernel-module package gives you RAM-based CBT, which is great until somebody forgets where the maps live.
They live in memory.
So every reboot, or any unload of the module, resets the CBT map. The next incremental is still correct, but it has to re-read the whole protected scope to determine what changed. That means more time and more I/O on that run. It is expected behavior, not corruption and not a Veeam bug. You just have to plan for it, especially on systems with regular reboot cycles.
Linux application consistency is script-driven, not VSS-driven
This is another place where Windows instincts mislead people.
Linux does not have VSS, so application consistency depends on pre- and post-snapshot scripts. The pre-script is where you quiesce the workload. The post-script is where you bring it back to normal.
For databases, that matters a lot. PostgreSQL and MySQL examples are straightforward enough, but the design point is more important than the exact commands: if the pre-script fails, the backup should fail. Quietly taking a crash-consistent backup of a workload that was supposed to be quiesced is worse than an obvious failure.
That default behavior is the right one for database systems. Leave it that way unless you have a very specific reason not to.
Bare metal recovery works, but you do not want your first time to be a real outage
This is probably the most useful part of the Linux Agent story to practice ahead of time.
The recovery media side sounds simple on paper: boot the ISO, connect to the repository, pick the restore point, map the disks, restore the volumes, handle the bootloader, reboot.
In real life, the friction is in the details.
The prebuilt Veeam ISO is the safe path when Secure Boot is enabled. Custom patched recovery media is more attractive for odd hardware because it uses the source server’s running kernel and drivers, but it is not the answer everywhere. Either way, the media has to see your NICs and storage controllers, or the rest of the recovery plan stops before it starts. That is why the recovery media should be tested ahead of time, even if it feels like busywork.
The actual restore flow is manageable: boot the media, optionally enable SSH for remote control, connect to VBR, pick the restore point, map volumes to the target disks, and run the restore.
Where Linux admins usually end up doing manual cleanup is after the data is back.
On hardware-changed restores, GRUB repair is common. Initramfs regeneration is common too, especially when the restored system lands on different storage or network hardware than the source. Neither one is exotic, but both are much easier when you expected them going in.
That is why I would never call Linux BMR hard, but I also would not call it obvious.
Most restores are not bare metal anyway
The day-to-day recoveries are usually easier.
File-level restore is the quick answer when somebody needs a handful of files back and you do not want to disturb the running system.
Volume-level restore is useful when a data volume is damaged but the rest of the system is fine.
Bare metal recovery is the bigger hammer when the root volume or full machine state is the problem.
Knowing which one you actually need matters, because too many teams jump straight to the heaviest option before checking whether a smaller restore path would solve the problem faster.
Final thoughts
The Linux Agent is not harder than the Windows Agent. It is just less forgiving if you ignore the Linux-specific parts.
The deployment mode matters. The package choice matters. Snapshot-space planning matters. CBT behavior after reboots matters. Pre and post scripts matter. Recovery media testing matters.
If I were rolling this out in production, I would get five things right before anything else: use VBR-managed mode wherever possible, prefer the kernel-module package over nosnap, check volume-group free space before the first backup, keep pre-script failure behavior strict for application workloads, and test recovery media before there is a real incident.
That is the difference between the agent is installed and this Linux server is actually recoverable.
