3-2-1-1-0 Golden Backup Rule

More and more companies are depending totally of their ICT infrastructure (on-premises, private cloud, hybrid cloud, public cloud) …Ransomware and hackers are more popular than ever…Therefore one of the most important things is that the company has a solid backup strategy, so we can fall back at those in case of disaster or being impacted by ransomware or hackers.You can find very often the 3-2-1 rule. Some issues with Veeam ONE Data Collection

HiMy setup is as follows : - 1 server (in a workgroup) with Veeam ONE (service account of service is a standalone user, member of Veeam ONE Administrators group and local administrators group)- 1 server (also in a workgroup) with VBR- several domain-joined Hyper-V serversProblem is situated in Veeam ONE : Adding the hyper-v servers with a domain-user (with of course local administrator group) is no problem.Adding the VBR server with a local administrator account is no problem.Adding Veeam ONE Agent on the VBR server is no problem.Problems : - in Infrastructure View : I am getting the error of bad hyper-v username logon attempt (refers to the user being used as service account on the server with Veeam ONEthe info of the Hyper-v server seems to be correct including the CPU graphs and so..Is there a way that another user can be chosen to collect the data instead of the Veeam ONE service account?- in Data Protection View : VBR server is not responding and getting the alarm : Server connect

Upgrade Veeam Cloud Connect to V12

Hi @Rick Vanover already created an awesome upgrade center for V12 (V12 Upgrade Center | Veeam Community Resource Hub) but I just wanted to add a bit more about upgrading to V12 especially for Veeam Cloud Connect at the service providers. As you all know, the GA edition of V12 was available since the 14th of February.As a service provider it was already possible to install the RTM edition of V12 2 weeks before on the 30th of January.That is a normal behaviour because all Veeam customers using a service provider should wait upgrading until the service provider has upgraded their infrastructure to the new major version.Why? The upgrade is breaking, it will not work until the service provider has performed the upgrade!Therefore the service provider should always be the first and afterwards it’s time for upgrading the Veeam environment of the customers.As being a service provider for VCC BaaS I decided to not install the RTM edition, but wait until the GA edition was available.Why? How to archive a backup of a VM?

Hi,In this topic I want to highlight the possibilities to archive a backup for a VM before you want to delete or decommision.Every company that uses VMs has to deal with deleting existing VMs, replacing them with new VMs because of migrating the application running on the VM, migrating because of using a new OS on the VM, …A lot of reasons why existing VMs will soon or later will be deleted or replaced by new ones. Hi all I hope you all read my post about the 3-2-1-1-0 golden rule - 3-2-1-1-0 Golden Backup Rule | Veeam Community Resource Hub.Perfect in combination with Veeam Backup & Replication to save your backups as good as possible to protect them against ransomware, hackers, ...But what with Veeam Backup for Office 365 ?There is no built-in option for creating backup copy jobs, so there is by my knowledge no option to copy the backups on your primary repository to a secondary repository.I know, Office 365 is running on high-available infrastructure but in case of ransomware or a hacker on your VBO365 server, all your backups can be deleted. So the rule 3-2-1-1-0 should also be implemented in this case.An option could be : create a second job with the same settings as the primary job except writing to another repository. Issue with NAS backup to object storage at iDRIVE

Hi guysI’m having a problem that I can’t seem to resolve.Perhaps someone already have had the same error or experience.Environment :It’s not on a production environment, but on my personal lab I’m using NAS backup of a big file-share to an on-premise repository without any issues I’m using a secondary copy of this backup to another repository without any issues I want to have next to that also a secondary copy of this backup to object storage in the cloudSince version 12 of VBR that is possible, before it was only possible to use object storage for the archive backup of a NAS-backup.I’m having an account at iDRIVE for E2 Immutable object storage.With that latest copy I’m having an issue that I can’t seem to resolve.Because it’s on my lab with my NFR license, I can’t create a support case for this 🤣 Issue : The job start, but after a while I’m getting the following error : HTTP exception: WinHttpReceiveResponse_callback_timeout: 12152: The server returned an invalid or unrecognized re

VBR SOBR Capacity Tier vs VBR Copy Job to Veeam Cloud Connect

More and more customers are aware of the fact that 1 copy of their backups is not longer enough . Yes!I always recommend to my customers and colleagues to implement the golden rule 3-2-1-1-0 (see my blog post : 3-2-1-1-0 Golden Backup Rule | Veeam Community Resource Hub).The thing I want to highlight is having 1 copy offsite and being airgapped - immutable at the same time! VBO365 - Public folders - Modern authentication and Legacy Protocols

Hi all As you all know, Microsoft is deprecating basic authentication from the first of October.So if you are using basic authentication in VBO365, it will no longer work.Personally we never use basic authentication, only modern authentication.Only when the customer is using public folders we are activating the option legacy protocols.What will happen with the backups of public folders after the deprecation of basic authentication when using modern authentication with legacy protocols.I assume that the backups are still working, except for the public folders. Am I correct?If so, what is the solution, alternative?Migrating the public folder to a shared mailbox or sharepoint online, so a backup is than possible?What if the customer still wants to use public folders?I know that Microsoft wants to get rid of public folders and is now in this pushing this 🤔.I already read the article on the Veeam forum, but no real solution or feedback from Microsoft.Public folder backup after October 1st

OFFLINE backup copy using rotating USB disks – part 1

As a system consultant I often implement solutions for customers in the SMB market.Working for the SMB market is often more challenging than working for the enterprise market because of the limited financial budget/investment. I always try to deliver a solution that is as good and secure as for customers of the enterprise market but of course with other and cheaper solutions 😉. The sequel of part 3 and last part 😄 How it works with Linux or shared folder repositoriesAs example : we connect a USB disk to a USB3-port at a NAS-device that is shared as a SMB-shareIn that scenario it’s behaving differently (it uses a limited version) than when using a Windows Server repository.Why limited?VBR keeps only information about the latest backup chain.So how is this performed :VBR creates the first time of course a full backup file on the currently attached disk, afterwards it creates incrementals until you swap or the number of configured restore points! Hi all In this post I want to describe my personal experience in preparing and taking the VMCE exam.I know that there are some other topics written about the VMCE exam, like a good post of our top legend @MicoolPaul 😉, but I also want to share my personal experience.It’s very hot these days because some of our legends have recently received a free VMCE course of VEEAM. Unprotected VMs - successful backup within the required RPO

Are all my virtual machines being backed up correctly and within the required RPO? Of course!I think..., or not 😉? Do I implement best practices in creating jobs?If using vSphere, do I use folders or tags or use whole clusters to add virtual machines to the job?If using HyperV, do I use whole clusters or hosts or in case of using SCVMM do I use tags? In my job as a system consultant specialised in Backup and Disaster Recovery (covered by Veeam products of course ) at a MSP, I’m also responsable for the Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructure and offering. HiIn the 2 days during VEEAMON 2021, there was often the question from new members why to choose Veeam over other competitors…Therefore my own top-15. There will be more reasons, but I think it will cover a lot of the reasons and I don’t think someone has to hesitate anymore ;-) PortabilitySomething I like very hard! It all started with a backup issue...but at the end...

Some weeks ago the backup monitoring team of my company had an issue with the backups of one of our customers…Where it started and where did it end...If you want to know, keep on reading The infrastructure of the customer : The customer was having a Hyper-V infrastructure with a couple of Hyper-V hosts and +/- 30 VMs running on shared storage (several CSV volumes) divided on those hostsThe customer is using backup-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication and is using replication-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication The backup issue : The backups were running fine, except for 1 VM.I don’t know anymore the exact error in Veeam…The engineers tried several things trying to resolve this issue, but nothing helped.At least they contacted me if I had an idea for this issue.I quickly noted the error and mentioned that the cause of this error is not related to the backup, but that there is a Hyper-V issue for this particular VM.I suggested two things : try at first a live migration of that part

The sequel of part 2 😉And it seems that a part 4 is also needed 🙄 Backup copy job : VBR creates the first time of course a full backup file on the currently attached disk When you swap the disk and if it is empty, it will create a full backup on itIf there is a backup chain on it for this job, it will create a new incremental in the current chain. The latest incremental is the start point of the new incrementalThe retention policy will be applied, so all backup-files that are outdated will be removed from the backup chainBecause I always use a backup copy job in combination with rotated drives as a offline/airgapped solution I always recommend the customer to swap the disks on a weekly basis. Therefore I mostly configure the job with 7 to 10 restore points meaning 1 full and 6 to 9 incrementals.I don’t care about the total wanted restore points, I see the number of restore points per disk. Poll : immutable object storage appliances

Hi all,This week no top-10 or top-15 or a best practice from me, but a poll this time ;-)Since object-storage is more and more interesting for putting backups onto, I want to implement object-storage appliances using SOBR capacity tier at our biggest customers and also on our VCC infrastructure.
