Veeam Certified Engineer 2021 Exam Released & Reviewed

I was recently made aware that Veeam have released the 2021 edition of the Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) exam. Windows Server 2022 Released – What to remember before you start upgrading!

Microsoft dropped a surprise on us today by releasing Windows Server 2022 to no fanfare at all. It’s been released today 18th August 2021, it will have mainstream support until the 13th October 2026 and will be considered end of life on the 14th October 2031 (how are we talking about the 2030’s already?!). This is evidenced in Microsoft’s updated Windows Server Release Information document.If you’re looking to grab an evaluation copy of Windows Server 2022 you can do so here. Alternatively if you have a suitable agreement with Microsoft you can also download a copy from VLSC or MSDN.Interested to learn what’s new in Windows Server 2022? Ready for Veeam B&R v11a?

Morning!In the latest “The Word From Gostev”, Anton Gostev has announced that the v11a platform update should be entering early availability this week. Normally you’d have to engage with Veeam support to receive this as a download but based on what appears to be a lack of engagement with this method (Anton stated they were never happy with the number of downloads yielded via this method), Veeam are looking to release the new updates during EA status via the Veeam R&D forums. If you’ve been living under a rock and you’re not aware of them, these are at https://forums.veeam.com To download the update you’ll need to go to the relevant product section of the forum.I’ll update this post when the EA downloads become available.Update:Thanks to @Mildur we know the updates will be available via the normal update threads on the R&D forums. vSphere 8.0 U2 is Released: Reminder not to Update immediately

Morning everyone, VMware vSphere 8.0 U2 is now available, with improvements to lifecycle management, AI workloads, and DevOps amongst others!https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2023/09/vsphere-8-update-2-now-available.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=vsphere-8-update-2-now-available A quick reminder to all, Veeam Backup & Replication v12 only supports up to vSphere 8.0 U1 currently. Veeam can’t start their validation until the code is available so we’ll now see Veeam begin their testing process. You can check the status of vSphere platform support here: https://www.veeam.com/kb2443Veeam typically target vSphere platform support within 90 days of release, so with the betas of VBR 12.1 functionality appearing online, I’d guess we won’t see 8.0 U2 support until 12.1 ships unless that encounters massive delays. So yes, wait for Veeam to support vSphere 8.0 U2 before you upgrade, there’s no point having all this new functionality if you can’t protect any of your work

VMCA 2022 Released!

Afternoon everyone! I just found out that Veeam have released the VMCA 2022 course and exam. We’ve had a few discussions around this exam within the community as originally Veeam were intending for everyone to take the VMCA 2022 course prior to sitting the exam, however between then and now they’ve changed it. I checked my portal this morning and it showed the “Step 1. Attend a training course” as ticked. I checked with my account manager that this was intentional and they confirmed it’s no longer mandatory to redo the course if you’ve already got a VMCA v1.To find out more simply go to: Get Veeam Certified Now! and then click on the “Veeam Certified Architect” tab. FAQs:I took the VMCA v1 training course but never took the exam, what should I do? The VMCA v1 is expected to retire on 31st December 2021, either sit the exam or take the VMCA 2022 training course and work on that instead. Should I take the training course? Of course, it’s not always cost-effective for some people to take

Fun Friday: Which Common Sysadmin Tool have you seen do the Most Damage?

Happy Friday all! Today, lets talk tools, the right tool in the wrong hands can be catastrophic. What tool have you seen so the most damage to an environment? Whether it’s a built in tool/feature or 3rd party, I wanna hear! For me, it’s Remote PowerShell. I witnessed this being used by a malicious script to deploy ransomware to every device in the domain and the rest of the network. The script was harvesting credentials from users working on the infected endpoint and the moment a domain admin signed in, BANG, remote PowerShell to all!

Happy Friday! We’re over halfway to 2023 (sorry to depress you!), it’s not uncommon for people to start a new year with goals or wishes for the year. How are yours shaping up? Are you on track? Have you had a busy start to the year but still have time to get on track? Share how you’re doing and any achievements below! For me, I knew I was starting a new job, so I wanted to make sure I passed my probation (I did), move house (I have), and either advance my Azure, VMware or Kubernetes knowledge and pass an exam in one of these subjects, I haven’t yet but now I’m getting into a better frame of mind I can start on this! I also had a great year with my blog last year and I wanted to prove its not a fluke by getting a similar view count this year as last year, I’m also proud to say I’ve smashed that 😁 Your turn community!

VMCE 2021/VMCA 2022 Expiration

Hi, Possibly a question for @Federica or @haslund. As the VMCE & VMCA are yet to have their new exam & certification released, willl there be an extension to the expiry of the current VMCE & VMCAs?For example:I sat my VMCE 2021 in June 2021, my VMCE states it expires the 9th June 2023. Likewise I sat my VMCA in September 2021, and my VMCA states it expires the 1st September 2023. I’m conscious that this looks like it’s just an automation, but as we’re a VASP, and our ProPartner portal is showing this imminent expiry, that it could reflect badly on my organisation if my certifications have ‘expired’ even if there isn’t a replacement certification available. A second question on this, after the 2023 grade exams are available, how long will we have to upgrade before the certifications are counted as ‘expired’ within ProPartner? Thanks!

Fun Friday: Linux Distribution of Choice?

Hey everyone, I was working on reviving my decade old MacBook Pro yesterday, I didn’t want to put MacOS on it again because the only versions it supports are end of life, so inevitably I went down the Linux route. I prepped my USB, installed my distribution of choice (Ubuntu) and set it up as I needed (my dedicated GPU is dead so I needed a fair few tweaks to force the integrated one). As I was installing Ubuntu, it occurred to me, I gave ZERO thought to deploying anything other than Ubuntu, it’s just MY default go-to when I need a Linux OS. So, what’s your go-to? Why is it your go-to? Was it a feature, a security/compliance requirement? Was it the support? Or was it the first one you just *clicked* with?For me, I first started using Ubuntu on the 10.x release. I used Debian and Centos, but Ubuntu just felt nicer to use, helping me learn more about Linux and getting me comfortable enough to go headless on a Linux server (which would make me more confident when Windows started doing Cor

Morning all,Happy Friday!As per @victorwu’s post, vSphere 7.0 U3c is now rereleased!I’m not here to kick them when they’re down, but VMware didn’t have the best of times with vSphere 7.0, but after their divorce from Dell EMC and the subsequent pulling of vSphere 7.0U3c for quality concerns, will this release finally be worthy of the VMware name? So, my question to you all. vSphere 6.5/6.7 are end of life later this year, so if you’re still on 6.5/6.7, will this release make you look at upgrading? Or are you still unsure and want to hold out until nearer the EOL? Share your thoughts!

Remembering Detective Mildur (and congratulations to him!)

Today, we lose a Veeam Legend!  For those that don’t know, you can’t be a Veeam Legend if you’re employed by Veeam. And that is what we celebrate today! 🥳 @Mildur officially joins Veeam today as a Product Management Analyst.I’m proud to call Mildur a friend (and Detective, Detective Friend?) since first meeting him here on the Community Hub back in 2020. Morning all, This slipped under my radar on Friday, VMware have fixed some huge bugs such as inability to enable HA on ESXi U3 hosts in this release. But they’ve also pulled the original U3 update due to issues with failing rollup upgrades! Timothy Dewin’s Famous RPS Tool is now Deprecated

Hey everyone, Tim announced earlier today that his famous RPS (Restore Point Simulator) tool is now deprecated. If this name doesn’t mean anything to you, the URL likely will: https://rps.dewin.me. For years this tool has been a must have for anyone working with data protection. Now Veeam have an official tool (Fun Fact, some RPS code was used/referenced in the official tool so it lives on!). The official tool is available at https://calculator.veeam.com/vbr, it has been available for a little while now but today is the day Tim officially announced the deprecation of the project. As such please remember to use the official tool as part of your sizing efforts moving forwards. And finally, thanks Tim for all the times your tool has helped us out!
