Monitoring Veeam Backup Server with Checkmk

Frequently I'm ask in how to monitor backup jobs of Veeam externally Veeam servers.I know that we can do this easy with Veeam One. But here I’m going to show you a solution to monitor backup jobs having only a Veeam Backup Server (without VEM or VONE).So, the application I’m talking about is Checkmk. Checkmk is a monitoring software usually used on NOC (Network Operations Center) environments. However, this is an easy tool to deploy and very light to hav in our backup environment. VersionsCheckmk has a free and commercial version:Checkmk Raw Edition (CRE) – Free and 100% Open Source. It even incorporates Nagios into its core. You can use it to monitor entire environments. Support for this release is available through the Checkmk community forum.Checkmk Enterprise Free Edition (CFE) – version already based on the standard edition, with Checkmk Micro Core (CMC), which means that it is no longer based on Nagios and is aimed at small IT environments with a single site and up to 25 monitore

Using Veeam we can have various types of files. But do you know all of those file extensions? Upgrading Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV V5

Recently Veeam release a new version of Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV. A bunch of new features came out of the box with this upgrade.So, the the latest build versions of Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV now is:Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 5 - 5.0.0.1080 Nutanix AHV Plug-In for Veeam Backup & Replication - 12.5.0.465 The process to upgrade the environment is really easy and the idea is not a step by step, for the simple fact that is not necessary a complete how to about this. VMCE v12 x VMCE 2021

As we know, the VMCE v12 is comming soom and with that a new exam with new topics including building backup capabilities, restoring from backup and advanced repository functionalities, etc are coming too. But at this moment my questions is about VMCE 2021.Do you know how long we can still book the exam VMCE 2021?Do you think it's still worth trying to pass VMCE 2021 or its better wait for v12 exam?

Understanding Veeam Application Aware

We know that Veeam Backup & Replication can back up virtual machines. This is one of the main functions of Veeam and it has the most features and options that we can configure. Normally, when we are starting in the backup area and taking the first steps in data protection, one of the features that ends up going unnoticed is Application Aware.So, application Aware is a function that we can configure in our backup jobs. It allows us to consistently create backup. Consistent Backup But after all, what is consistent backup?By default Veeam Backup & Replication does not perform your backups consistently. This occurs because a default configured backup job does not process a server's application logs. We must remember that Veeam backs up servers through snapshots taken in the virtualization environment. As a result, Veeam ends up not communicating directly with the operating system of each of these virtual machines. This causes Veeam to consider and perform these backups inconsistent

Vulnerability CVE-2023-27532 - Applying Patch

Recently we had a vulnerability on Veeam Backup & Replication called CVE-2023-27532.So today, I’m going to show how easy is update VBR and install the patch to correct this threat. According with KB4424, we need to download the patch correctly to v11 or v12. In my case I going to update a v12 environment. So, the first thing is download patch: After that we only to unzip the downloaded file: The installation is really simple. We only need next, next, finish: I prefer to do not check box to update components automatically. We can do that as a final step after installation: Just click finish: Now we can open our VBR console and update the last component: At the end we can check that Veeam Backup & Replication is on 12.0.0.1420 P20230223:

Changing vCenter Name on Veeam

How can we see here, vCenter IP/FQDN is not possible to change inside of Veeam B&R. In my case I put the IP of vCenter server on Veeam Backup & Replication and now I’d like to change it to a hostname accordingly the DNS server name. So, first of all we need to open the Console / PowerShell on burger menu of Veeam B&R. So, at this moment we need type the command:$Servers = Get-VBRServer -name "old-name-or-ip"On my case the IP of my vCenter server is 192.168.10.100. After that we just need type the following command:$Servers.SetName("new-name-or-ip")On my scenario it is ROM2SRVVLVC01. And now, with this two only commands we can see that the vCenter name was changed on Veeam Backup & Replication: To finish I just rescan the vCenter server again to see all the set up is ok.

Windows Service with Status Stopping

Sometimes when trying to restart a service in Windows, the service happens to have a status of Stopping. As a result, it ends up getting stuck and without the possibility of giving the stop and start command. Here in this case, we can see the Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager service crashed: So we need to terminate the process of this service through the command prompt. Atualização de Segurança Veeam - CVE-2023-27532

Ontem (07/03/2023) foi publicada uma vulnerabilidade crítica de segurança relacionada ao Veeam Backup & Replication. A vulnerabilidade foi identificada com o CVE-2023-27532 e permite que usuários não autorizados tenham acesso as credenciais criptografadas que ficam armazenadas dentro do banco de dados do Veeam Backup & Replication. Em função disso o atacante pode obter as informações de acesso de todos os componentes que foram apresentados dentro da infraestrutura de backup. A vulnerabilidade teve uma nota no CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System Calculator) de 7.5 que já é uma nota considerada alta. A Veeam já publicou o KB4424 com o patch que corrige a vulnerabilidade. Oracle Backup Redo Log Error - Sequence contains no matching element

Recently I got this error below during the Oracle redo log backup:Oracle redo log errorMy backup job configuration is about a Veeam Linux Agent in an Oracle Linux and the application aware was configured to backup logs with 15 minutes interval and delete logs older than 24 hours:Application aware configurationThis kind of configuration is very common on critical databases and I have this same configuration in various environments.So, the first thing I assumed is that the cause of the problem was not on the Veeam side.Looking on Linux side I discovered that the user used on Guest Processing configuration needs to be part of the oinstall group on OS.So, the only thing I did was put this user on this group:usermod -aG oinstall <my_user> After that, all Oracle redo logs started to being process successfully:Oracle redo log success
