Kubevirt on K3S

Thanks Geoff, another great exploring post. You mentioned “enable software virtualisation emulation” this is because you are running your K3s cluster on a hypervisor? Think you moved to Proxmox, so we have some physical hardware with Proxmox on and then you have your K3s VMs and cluster on there and then we have a testvm running on KubeVirt?

If I remember correctly you are a Macman as well so Rancher Desktop runs on ARM too https://rancherdesktop.io/ You won’t be able to run K10 on ARM

The Kube Vanguard Post Pandemic Wardrobe Syndrome and Talos!

Good stuff Geoff, Some good reading on the whys for using something like this vs the more traditional general Linux distributions. Size, Speed & Security are 3 areas I would simplify this into. A Guide to Immutable Kubernetes Operating Systems - Sidero Labs The session I did for #90DaysOfDevOps was here - I am working with Talos on my home lab as well which I have documented here - Kubernetes in the HomeLab 2024 Update - vZillaMy first endeavour into Immutable OS’s for Kubernetes was with AWS Bottlerocket - Kubernetes, How to – AWS Bottlerocket + Amazon EKS - DEV Community Also a demo from a few years back where K10 supports AWS Bottlerocket - Final thing to note, K10 works great on these talos clusters as well!

Project Pace: Had to slow down, minikube is broken!

@michaelcade, thanks and congrats for the Project Pace; at the beginning of our work with the Kasten K10, it was essential for us to present to customers and partners. I believe it was the pioneering demo environment for Kasten! 👍🏻 Good stuff, I want to update project pace with some learning and practical demos around K10 and databases but need the time to make this happen.

Yeah this is great @Geoff Burke we have been working on something with ContainerCraft to help the community with an end to end build your own HomeLab cloud using Talos and Pulumi The new HomeLab servers some may have seen on Twitter I got, they have Talos on bare metal I have started two write ups Talos Linux on vSphere Talos Linux on Bare Metal We have some audacious goals for this project with virtual machines landing here using the KubeVirt Project

Docker Desktop is back and I am impressed!

I don’t remember Docker having a UI. A little Docker horror story 😊 → I downloaded it and played around with it like 5yrs ago? One thing I wasn’t aware of, and I don’t believe they shared in their docs, was it created partitions on my drive...like...a LOT of them! My (work) MAC ended up being latent and basically coming to a screaching halt. My Director (MAC guru) looked at it and found all the partitions and was like “what in the world?!” 😄 He had to fully reimage my machine. Thankfully, I was done playing around with it, and also had all my files in external locations. But, I learned a lot! I remember you telling me this Shane and we must be talking a decade ago? 2013 was the first iteration of Docker Desktop. I think your story is poignant though in that I believe many people might have dabbled and attempted the “hello-world” docker run hello-worldBut then had no purpose to keep exploring or there was not any focused off the shelf software to play around with, since that 2013 and

Podman Desktop and Minikube a great combination to start your Kubernetes Journey!

Great Stuff Geoff as always… One word of warning with my Kasten K10 hat on…. Currently Kasten K10 is not working on minikube due to a volumesnapshot issue. K10 can still be deployed to a Minikube cluster using the usual Helm chart deployment but it will not complete a backup. @DrObject Good to see you, love the idea to kick things off with a RaspberryPi. A word of warning for you though there is that K10 is not ARM supported so be careful with any data services you wish to run and backup. Interesting. I recently used the csi-hostpath driver in rancher desktop, but I am cloning the latest version from github and installing manually. It could be that minikube are using an older version. Will check that out. Thanks for the heads up as that was going to be next week’s post 😁and I would have been stuck in one of those.. “it worked before.. what the heck” moments. that is a good point I should look at what version of the volumesnapshot and hostpath driver is being used.

Does kasten k10 support arm64 architecture?

Kasten K10 is not supported for ARM CPU architecture, we are keeping a close eye on this request and we have a feature request in but no timeline on if or when this will be implemented.
