Veeam Licence? What is better to buy?

Hello @dloseke, today a have 45VM and i will to backup all us this, and also have a Job for the replication of all of this. so for the licence i need to coutn 45 or 45+45=90 becausa a have the replicatin workload? Or a coutn only the VM? Thanks a lot Alfred  It is licensed per workload (VM)...doesn’t matter what you do with it.  So 45 is 45 regardless of if it’s a backup, replica, etc.

The awesomeness of Veeam Recovery Orchestrator (VRO) Clean DR!

Thanks for sharing Joe.  That is one thing I didn’t like about VBR doing this work..it only scans the most recent restore point.  Great to see that VRO can scan other restore points as well and something that I didn’t know it could do!

Veeam Licence? What is better to buy?

Yeah, since you’re pretty much right at the limit for Essentials, unless you’re sure your workloads isn’t going to increase, I’d go with 5 10-pack licenses of Advanced.  This gives you some room to grow and makes it easier to go beyond that 50 workload limitation of Essentials.

Dell PowerStore Plug-In for OS 3.X has been released

Thanks for Sharing.  My PowerStore is still running on the v2 OS but needs to be updated.  I also should be getting a new physical server for a Veeam proxy and repo, so hopefully I’ll be able to leverage that device to access my powerstore at 25+ Gb connectivity.  Not that I need it, but I have the capability and I may as well use it.

Comparison of IaaS services by the Big Five Hyperscalers

Thanks for the post. Does look really interesting. @dloseke I’ve not come across Dell LiveOptics before. Will check it out   Note that you have to be a Dell Partner to have access to the LiveOptics tool set.  Back in the EMC days, EMC used a tool called MiTrends as I recall, and Dell had DPACK.  With the merger of Dell and EMC, MiTrends was sunsetted (I think it was actually someone elses product that Dell was using) and DPACK was modified to include parts of both and became LiveOptics.  Super cool….does a good job of monitoring IO utilization, read/write ration, space requirements, memory and CPU trends, etc.  That’s LiveOptics Prime.  There is also a tool for review files on a windows server to determine duplicates, compressability, etc.  And then there are tools for evaluating utilization on Dell and some non-dell storage arrays, evaluating Veeam data, etc.  It’s pretty broad, but easily LiveOptics Prime is the workhorse.  It’s actually won me deals before because I was able to tai

Thanks for the great responses, this is very helpful.  Would it work if I installed VBR and an Agent on the same OS environment and tried to use VBR to back up its own physical server? I hadn’t thought of that.  I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.  A little wonky, but I don’t think there’s anything that would technically prevent this from working.

ONTAP 9.12.1P2 - Exceeding the 16 TiB LUN Limit and 100 TiB Volume Limit.

Nice feature add for NetApp customers for sure. I'm a Nimble person myself 😊 I do like the HF20 I deployed a couple months ago, but I’m a Dell guy personally.  Nimble to me just feels so much like an Equallogic. Nimble is definitely far from Equallogic I must say that.  LOL May be some similarities but Nimble is very good and I would choose that over some other vendors out there for sure.  😁 Oh...I’m not arguing that.  I’m just saying that some of the underlying architecture feels the same.  Active/Standby controllers, the concept of creating a group and adding multiple arrays to that group, etc.  There’s clearly some other items there such as the way Nimble does it’s caching and such that is beyond what Equallogic is, but I’m also comparing a current generation Nimble to a Product line that Dell sunsetted 6ish years ago.

VMware snapshots instead of production data.

Not much changes with storage snapshots   it’s just the SAN volume gets a snapshot and the VMware snpashot can be removed.   While Veeam does it’s thing, that SAN volume snapshot is a clone of the VM with the snapshot on it.   I get that.  But in the case of a storage snapshot, I believe both the base disk and delta disk(s) would be accessible because the active workload is shifted back to the life files on the array, and not the snapped files.

My apologies if this response seems scattered, but I was writing my response as I was reading it, and your last sentence is where I truly understood what you were trying to do.  I have the veeam service provider console and associated cloud connect server, and several single physical servers at different customer sites that I would like have a local backup + direct to object storage backup strategy for.  I was hoping to use veeam agents on the physical servers and just use my console + cloud connect server to manage / monitor the backups. Ideally backup data would just go to the local storage at the same physical site as the server (NAS/external USB), and be uploaded directly to object storage without going through the cloud connect server.  This is how most of my clients are setup.  They are running on either a physical server with local storage (my most recent and preferred method), or a VM that is attached to a NAS via ISCSI to the host as a RDM or direct to the NAS with the Windows

VMware snapshots instead of production data.

Although, the existing snapshots prohibit the usage of changed block tracking (CBT). Therefor the speed of the backup will be slower than without additional snapshots.  Also good to know.  I didn’t realize that CBT didn’t apply to snapshots - I do see however that to enable CBT there shouldn’t be snapshots on a VM or that can cause errors.

Think about it., If Veeam doesn’t backup the “last” snapshot, why would it be taking a snapshot at all.  I may have to do my own testing to make sure I understand how it works correctly. I had assumed that CBT included blocks on any delta disks in use as well.  But like I said, easy enough to test.With that said, in reference to your above, it takes a snapshot in order to free up the base disk for access.  If the VM is attached to the base disk, another VM can’t attach to it to gain read access.  The snapshot offloads the access for the production VM to a delta (snapshot) disk.  This is almost sort-of difference in the case of storage snapshots.

@dloseke  Veeam doesn’t back up any snaps. If you have 6 snaps on a VM (user-created, for ex.), they don’t get backed up...just the point-in-time of the parent disk before the 1st snap was taken. Yikes….good to know.

See points 7 & 8 here (I looked it up for my review as well) 😊 Veeam backs up the read-only (i.e. parent/source) VM disk.  Wait...you’re saying that if there is a delta disk and then Veeam creates a snap for the backup, it only reads the base disk and doesn’t look for changed blocks in the delta?  Easy enough to test, but I assumed it reads the delta’s as well.

At least I remember people bugging me saying. “what are these, can I get rid of them”.. check if no backup in running first :).  Had someone ask me that yesterday.  Had a string of about 6 snapshots on a VM asking me if it was okay to commit them.

VeeamON 2023 - What I Wish You Knew About SureBackup - Post Event Discussion

One thing which might be nice to focus on is the whole proxying capability with production.   One of the things I hate most about SureReplica, and I’ve said this before, is that you have to setup routing to the proxy server to get to the sandbox network when your replica’s exist on a different subnet than the backup server.  Just talked about this with a client 2 hours ago.  I wish it issued the network checks from the proxy appliance rather than the backup server and we could avoid the manual networking.

Thanks for posting this.  I’ll look through it in my free time.  I don’t have much in the cloud right now, but when I have a client that asks about a Lift and Shift, I run a Dell LiveOptics capture and just give the estimates that it comes up with there.  Perhaps that can be more helpful.

Error: Failed to perform authentication with the secondary password: the token is invalid

The SPC gives some basic error messages but it looks like we need to gather logs from the server running the agent.
