Veeam Replication Job

I’m in the middle of rebuilding my environment right now.  Until earlier this week, my VBR server was running at the primary site with proxy’s running at all locations.  Now my VBR server is running at the recovery site, still with proxy’s of course to handle the backups, copy jobs and replication jobs.  I currently run the vCenter at the primary site with it connected to all locations, but my plan is to build a second vCenter at the recovery site to mange the hosts there, and then connect the original vCenter and the new vCenter using Enhanced Linked Mode to that each vCenter can see and manage the entire environment and I’m then able to deploy Recovery Orchestrator at the secondary site to mange failover, etc.  It may not be a one-size fit’s all solution, but that’s how I’m architecting mine.

Backup for M365: unable to add repository via SMB

Thanks for posting your answer...I would have not considered granting permissions to the server rather than a user.  Good information to know.  The think I probably would have done differently is connected to the NAS via ISCSI rather than SMB so that it appeared as a local volume and I didn’t have to mess with SMB permissions, etc.  Glad you got it working though.

M365 mailbox Backup source (M365) slowness?

One of our previous engineers has set the mailbox job to be backed up every hour. Is this ideal? How often are you backing up the mailbox users? Once a day.  No reason to me to back up that often. The question is why?? I tend to back up every 8 hours.  But chances are, I don’t need to run it that often.  And as I get more org’s/mailboxes on the server, I may be forced to back that off from 3x a day, but for now that works.

VMware Free ESXi = No Longer Free

I hope Veeam never drops the free version of VBR 👀 I dont see us doing that.   We love our community.   And Broadcom….we’ll they’re not invested in the community because VMware was an acquisition.  I feel no loyalty from them, and instead feel like they’re judging everyone based on the size of their annual spend.

About the VRO

My top selling points for VRO when talking to clients it the automation and reporting for DR testing, as well as one-click failover, but also orchestrating failback.  Everyone loves to failover for DR testing, but few seem to test failing back.

Recover back to an On-Prem Infrastructure

Great post….I’m with Shane, have very little cloud solutions, but there are many folks moving things back from the cloud, so it’s great to see more information that can ease that transition.

End Of General Availability of the Free vSphere Hypervisor

I think it’s going to make it harder to get newer guys to play with VMware products.  I think they’re going to go forward with the likes of ProxMox and XCP-NG and even the likes of FreeNAS and such.  But I have to agree with Gostev, in that if they goal is to cut out small business and go enterprise-only, this is a great step towards that.

vbr 12.1 False positive malware detection

I’m disappointed.  Everyone is out here reporting false positives for malware scanning.  I turned it on my production environment earlier this week or late last week and nary a peep from Veeam.  And my one file server has, I would guess hundreds of thousands of files across I think about 5-7TB of data.  I would have figured SOMETHING would trigger it…..

12.1 Hidden Features, Egress and PostgresVeeam Community Recap #151

I like the new video capture.  The quality did seem better but not a ton - but I tend to view on a smaller screen so maybe that’s why.  That said, I like the name tags and the transitions between the video camera/attendee display and sharing your screen and back.  All in all, looked pretty slick.  No audio quality issues noticed on my end, but I do hope you can get Zoomit working with this as well as I do like the Zoomit capabilities that you have running.

Big News Cohesity buys Veritas what will that mean for Veeam?

Whoa! Interesting! I haven’t heard much about Veritas lately..years, to be exact. So thought I’d do a little web searching. I thought Symantec had bought Veritas, or vice versa...couldn’t recall. From what I found out, they had merged in 2004, then demerged in 2014. Enter Broadcom….yes that Broadcom 😂 In 2019 they acquired the Enterprise Security software division of Symantec, and Symantec then was named NortonLifeLock. NortonLifeLock then merged with Avast (whoever that is) in 2022 and changed its name to Gen Digital...with HQs based in Tempe, AZ and our fave place...PRAGUE! 😊  Yes, NetBackup was a Symantec product, then they spun off as a Veritas product, and then put it back under Symantec.  And yeah...Broadcom acquired Symantec, and what was already a pretty poor product IMO could not have gotten better from there.  It’s amazing how many iterations a company can go through…..

Invalid mail credentials

I’ve heard rumblings in the past that basic auth for SMTP would go away eventually too though I couldn’t really pinpoint to anything substantial.  I’ve operated under that assumption for a while now and avoid SMTP basic auth when I can.  But yeah, I don’t see anything official about it going away anytime soon.

12.1 install and Malware Detection

Great to hear Scott.  Will be interested to see what you think of the new features.  We tend not to have remote consoles but might be something we look at for sure.  I know my laptop will need a new update. 😋 I have a client that has an “engineering” workstation that has the remote client (as well as clients for WSUS, business apps, etc).  And I run it on my laptop sometimes if I need.  Aside from that, it’s generally a bit of a pain to keep that updated as well.

Shane posted in another thread about starting a KC region, but KC is about 3 hours from Omaha, NE, so I could attend in-person there.  That said, it’s a long round-trip drive, but I’ve done it before for Dell events.

Find VM identifier on backup or replication logs

This is very odd.  Assuming the production machines were on, deleting should fail because they are in use.  Were they on?That said, I’d be looking at the replicas to see if the drives are somehow mapped back to the production machines.  Not sure why, or maybe host depending on your configuration, but this should not be happening.This does seem less like a Veeam issue to me and more of a vSphere issue though.  If it were me, I’d remove the VM’s from the replication job (or delete the job) and then manually remove the replica’s within vCenter (after obviously checking everything out for oddities.

Windows Server 2025 and Veeam B&R

Thanks for posting this.  I’ve heard that there’s new Hyper-V features, so I had considered setting up a 2025 Hyper-V server and seeing if Veeam will protect those VM’s out of the box.

VBR 12.1.1 Backup Configuration Warning Failed to connect to Red Hat Virtualization plug-in.....

Interesting Answer from Support. It’s not a bug. You just need to uninstall unnecessary plug-ins. If this is true, why VBR12.1.1 install all plug-ins automically?????   “The issue you are facing isn't a bug that I am aware of, just simply an issue where a component is installed that is not really necessary. Once removed the error caused by the component clears away and is not seen again. Please see the information from my previous e-mail below: Looking over your issue, I have seen this before and the resolution is simple, since you advised that there is no Red Hat Virtualization in use then you can simply go to Add/Remove Programs on the Veeam Backup Server. Locate the "Red Hat Virtualization Plug-in for Veeam Backup and Replication" and simply remove it as it is not needed. Once that has been removed, please retry the Configuration Backup and let me know the results. If you have any additional questions, please respond to this e-mail and let me know.”  I think we’ve given this advise

Watch out for KB5034441 released to patch CVE-2024-20666

Thx for sharing @dips. IMHO Microsoft sees the customers as a large test-environment 🙄. Yep, we are all testers in some form :P  Everyone has a test environment.  Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a separate production environment.
