"possible ssl heartbleed attempt" reported by Meraki firewall for Veeam port 902 traffic?

We're getting a fairly large number (~1K/week) of "OpenSSL SSLv3 large heartbeat response - possible ssl heartbleed attempt" IDS alerts and blocked connections from our Meraki firewall for ESXi-Veeam traffic.The alerts look like this:Time Type Source Network Destination Disposition Action Details Mar 25 2:59:25 IDS Alert <ESXi IP>:902 <network name> VeeamDRS Meraki Network OS Blocked SERVER-OTHER OpenSSL SSLv3 large heartbeat response - possible ssl heartbleed attempt Most of the alerts for OpenSSLv3, with a few for TLSv1.1 and TLSv1. Veeam errors, newbie here: Unable to apply retention policy. Failed to delete backup files

Hi, I have not been inside Veeam for a while. I am getting errors as in the snapshot below:I understand it is complaining about storage space for backups but I am trying to zero in on what to attack first here. The one that interests me is “Unable to apply retention policy: failed to delete backup files error…...is locked by running session xxx-xxx [Instant recovery]. Is Veeam just too busy to start the backup because it could not apply retention policy? Not sure which item to investigate first...ar

ransomware attack datastore

Hi, greeting from newbie last month, our neighboring company was attacked by ransomware,it become worst because their datastore is encrypted too, they still use vmware 5.5 from investigation, they analyze that one server made network drives directly to the datastore,that's why ransomware is able to attack and encrypted the datastore. i want to know if it is possible to create a network drive directly? if attack the datastore is possible, I think veeam replicated server will be useless.

Can't install Veeam Agent for Windows 5.0.1 on Windows 11

I know there is a related topic with the same problem but that one is for version 5.0.0 There is a known problem with Windows 11 and the installation of Microsoft SQL Server where the engine will not install unless it is installed on a different drive or VHD.I understand Veeam Agent for Windows uses SQL Server technology which is probably why it fails to install.Question 1: Is Veeam working on a solution independent of Microsoft?Question 2: I installed SQL Server 2019 Express with support for local DB but Veeam Agent for Windows still fails. Is there any way to have Veeam use the existing (operational) engine instead of attempting to install its own SQL engine? I read somewhere that they are using SQL 2012 but I haven’t tried preinstalling that version.Question 3: Is there any way to trick Veeam into installing on a different drive?I use Veeam at work and have been pretty happy with this product for home use. I already temporarily installed another backup solution but would love to go

Reverse incremental restore

I get the difference between RI and FI. The question is, if I’m using RI, can I do a full restore at a point in time in the past? As in, I walk in this morning and all my servers have been crypto. Obviously, the last backup (full) is useless. Can I ask for a full restore or instant recovery as of 2 days ago?

Veeam Cloud Connect Question

Hi,We’re a long time user of Veeam B&R and it’s worked very well for our on-site backups.I’m now testing/evaluating Veeam Cloud Connect with a UK based Veeam CSP (PeaSoup) to additionally backup some of our critical VMs to a Cloud Repository. This is a 5TB trial, but I’m not sure if this has any bearing on my question.This is my scenario:When running a Cloud Connect Backup Copy Job containing 15 VMs only 2 of these VMs will ever be running/active concurrently. The other VMs will be “Waiting for backup infrastructure resources availabilty” until 1 of the active backups completes and then the remaining VMs are processed sequentially; but never more than 2 concurrently. Whilst I understand what this means, I’d like to know what “decides” this limitation.So my questions:Is it an internal Veeam algorithm, available bandwidth or is it the Cloud Service Provider that “decides” this? As a trial user is it possible that we’re being limited to 2 concurrent connections by the CSP? Is it a “ha

How far into the Kubernetes and Cloud Native learning journey are you?

Hi Everyone, I have just moved over to Kasten on loan from Veeam to really focus on the Technical Community and Content. I thought I would ask the Veeam community about your experiences so far into the learning journey of Kubernetes and Cloud Native technologies. I have been on this learning curve for the past 2 years and there is still quite a bit to tackle and as always in technology you can go as far and as wide on all areas of learning. I have started to document this for the blog my building out an environment in my home lab. I want to see how you are all navigating this? Any training methods you have found? Are your companies starting to or into the Kubernetes journey? and here is another one, how long before we see this trend become our normal, most likely alongside virtualisation which we all know and love today. Finally I would love to hear from you if you have Kubernetes or Kasten blog content because we want to share this as wide as possible.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) triggers Full Files to Tape backup of complete repository?

Hi there in Virtual World :)Running Veeam 11 - We experienced a complete full “Files to Tape” backup when the daily Tape job ran for the first time after entering Daylight Saving Time (DST) last weekend.ALL files in our backup Disk repository (xx TB) - that means UNCHANGED Veeam backup files from the last 4 months - was all sent to Tape once again - taking several job-runtime days to finish - and filling up a lot of new Tapes, which we needed to supply into the Tape library.Have anybody else experienced similar issues?As far as I have read - Veeam operates in the UCT format - which should not be sensitive due Server time changes or DST - except changes in the local job time schedule:Daylight savings time - Veeam R&D ForumsDaylight saving switch changes job start time - Veeam R&D Forums We didn`t have any other issues running the usual VM Machine jobs to disk.This issue has been raised to the Veeam Support - and it has been escalated to their RnD engineers.So hopefully they wil

Afternoon everyone! Happy Friday, going for a valentines day theme today as it’s only a few days away now (REMINDER IF YOU NEED TO BUY A CARD OR PRESENT STILL!!!). So, you’re working in the technology world, you may hate it at times, but there’s a fine line between love and hate. (Except for you printers, I hate you). What was the first moment of pure joy/love you had working with tech? Or worded another way, what was your first memorable moment in tech that you found impressive/amazing? However you word it, tech has had a profound impact on our lives globally, what ignited the spark? I was writing in BASIC at a young age, and I remember the first time I started working with 3D objects/models. I think I was using DirectX 7 or 8, and I remember having some stock assets, making a terrain, creating a camera that would follow an object and programming in movement controls to the object. DR Architecture bests pratices

Hi everyone,Hi have a question concerning veeam disaster recovery seting up with veeamCurrently I have my full infra on my production site.For my disaster recovery project, I plan to move my NAS which is used as SMB Repo, I plan to also move my backup + proxy server using for replica job.After that i will install veeam disaster recovery orchestrator on the DR site and manage my disaster recovery plan with it.I my architecture I don't a vcenter server in my DR site. I plan to use the main site vcenter server to manage DR Esxi (2 hypervisors).Is it recommended to do it like this?I would like to know if not having a dedicated vcenter for my hypervisors on the PRA site could be a problem.I would like to have comments and recommendations on this architecture. Hi,I will change my vm’s hosting to use SCVMM.I don’t find page which explain the advantages to have SCVMM with veeam.I understand we have tags and, but I’m not sure, a live migration of a VM don’t affect backup chain.Is not it ?What is the bests practices to configure relationship between Veeam and SCVMM ? Error: Unstable connection: unable to transmit data.

Hello there,I have a backup job which was going seamlessly. but in the last days it was failing after reaching 80% with error message attached below. I tried the job by disabling firewall rules nothing new occurred. All backup infrastructure components are working fine for other VMs. I have also checked firewall logs but there is nothing blocked related to this backup.Error message:Error: Unstable connection: unable to transmit data. Failed to upload disk. Skipped arguments: [vddkConnSpec>]; Agent failed to process method {DataTransfer.SyncDisk}. Exception from server: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: [11956]. Failed to download disk 'VM-Name.vmdk'. I need to figure out how to resolve this issue immediately.

Using an Asustor NAS? Shut it down immediately!

Hi everyone, Quick one here due to time sensitivity. Deadbolt, the ransomware that has previously been utilised to attack QNAP NAS devices, has been used to attack Asustor NAS devices. Looks like there’s an exploit in the EZ Connect system, so advice is currently to disconnect the NAS from the internet and disable this service on the NAS. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/if-you-own-an-asustor-nas-shut-it-down-now The official Reddit mega thread has been pouring through the services that could’ve exploited the NAS whilst Asustor are looking into this. Even Asustor’s live demo page got impacted! (Won’t post a link due to potentially malicious content, it’s in the Reddit thread if anyone is feeling brave/stupid) I’ve been affected, what do I do?
