PKi Cert has expired on Vcenter Server and Veeam can't connect to backup VMs.

Hi, Our PKI cert has expired on our VCS server, and as a result the backups of the VMs are failing as Veeam can’t connect to the VCS. Its going to take us a few days to get another cert generated and installed on the VCS - but is there any workaround we can do in the meantime to get the Veeam Backup and Replication software to backup our VMs? I’m assuming not really - as that’s the point of certificates!Any suggestions most welcome.Thanks...

It all started with a backup issue...but at the end...

Some weeks ago the backup monitoring team of my company had an issue with the backups of one of our customers…Where it started and where did it end...If you want to know, keep on reading The infrastructure of the customer : The customer was having a Hyper-V infrastructure with a couple of Hyper-V hosts and +/- 30 VMs running on shared storage (several CSV volumes) divided on those hostsThe customer is using backup-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication and is using replication-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication The backup issue : The backups were running fine, except for 1 VM.I don’t know anymore the exact error in Veeam…The engineers tried several things trying to resolve this issue, but nothing helped.At least they contacted me if I had an idea for this issue.I quickly noted the error and mentioned that the cause of this error is not related to the backup, but that there is a Hyper-V issue for this particular VM.I suggested two things : try at first a live migration of that part

I will be putting in all the new features and updating much of the content to focus around v11. Transfer Hardened Repository & Associated Jobs to new Veeam Server

Hello Community! I am in the middle of modifying my Backup/DR environment → adding infrastructure, upgrading VBR servers, etc, etc...basically a refresh cycle as it were. One of my VBR Servers is used for DR purposes using Veeam Replication. I created a new server for it on the newest server OS (2022) and did a Configuration Backup migration. This was the first time I performed a DB migration and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of this task. Well done Veeam! As for my other VBR server, I’m not wanting to do a DB migration. I’m going to recreate most everything from scratch for various reasons. But, out of just under 30 jobs I have on this server, I do want to retain 7 of them. Sadly, as some of you know based off a Hub post from a yr or so ago by @shawnl :..exporting Jobs isn’t really possible. I really would like a Backup/Copy Job export function in the Console personally. Anybody else concur this would be a useful feature add?But, I digress. My main purpose here is to provide t

Merge 2 Veeam VBR servers into one.

I have 2 Veeam V11 VBR servers. Which backup different servers. Servers are mostly VMWare, Windows/Linux and some Agent backups. No NFS/CIFS/ network share backups. At one point in time, these were 2 VBR servers in 2 separate data-centers but these data-centers got merged so now they’re located in the same data-center. They each use backup copy jobs to offload backups to Azure. For Azure, they’re using the same account, but upload to a different folder. Both servers have different proxies and different backup repositories. Backup repo’s are a combo of Windows and Linux (immutable). Each server uses a different SQL (server 2019) back-end. Now, the idea is, to upgrade Veeam to V12 and merge these 2 V11 VBR servers into one V12 VBR server. Is this even possible? An upgrade to V12 can either done on the existing servers and then merge or I could build a new VBR server, install Veeam V12 and migrate both servers to the new one. OFFLINE backup copy using rotating USB disks – part 3

The sequel of part 2 😉And it seems that a part 4 is also needed 🙄 Backup copy job : VBR creates the first time of course a full backup file on the currently attached disk When you swap the disk and if it is empty, it will create a full backup on itIf there is a backup chain on it for this job, it will create a new incremental in the current chain. The latest incremental is the start point of the new incrementalThe retention policy will be applied, so all backup-files that are outdated will be removed from the backup chainBecause I always use a backup copy job in combination with rotated drives as a offline/airgapped solution I always recommend the customer to swap the disks on a weekly basis. Therefore I mostly configure the job with 7 to 10 restore points meaning 1 full and 6 to 9 incrementals.I don’t care about the total wanted restore points, I see the number of restore points per disk. I tell you later why.Normally the disks chosen are having a capacity of +/- 2 times a full back

vcli - a universal Veeam CLI tool

Hi all, I’ve been toying around with the idea of a cli tool that works with everything and is related to the other post I put up today on the Go-Veeam-Auth that does authentication for all Veeam APIs. Anyway, I’ve come up with vcli a simple terminal app written in Go, allowing you to switch between APIs with minimal effort quickly. All the authentication is set up, so all you need to do is set some environmental variables, and off you go (no pun intended).The main output is JSON, but you can switch it over to YAML via a --yaml switch.The tool only does GET requests at the moment, as I wanted to gauge the interest before committing any more time to the project. Where the power really comes in when it is coupled with “nushell” which is a data-centric approach to shells. It makes manipulating json response objects a breeze and also allows conversion to other data formats. It also has a whole module system which I go into a bit on my GitHub. Fun Friday #63: Fastest Backup Speeds

Happy Friday everyone!It’s time to get competitive 😁 What’s the fastest backup speed you’ve ever achieved with Veeam? I was working with a system recently that wasn’t using any flash within the backup repositories, but beefy RAID controllers and multiple RAID 60’s, and saw a pretty impressive 3GBps throughput at a job level. Sure it’s not NVMe speeds, but it’s certainly no slouch! And I can’t talk about this subject without bringing up my favourite ever UI Bug within Veeam, when I ‘achieved’ a speed of ~429.49PB/s 😂On your marks… get set… post!

Data Protection and lifecycle management

I’m a bit confused as to where the line is drawn between VEEAM and S3 compatible cloud storage providers and their data protection settings. Does VEEAM do the settings for data retention and immutability, or should those be set in the cloud storage provider bucket? Or is it a mash up of both?AKA; I can set Immutability in WASABI at the bucket. If I do not set the bucket immutability there, will VEEAM set it for me if it is configured for immutability or retention?I’m trying to figure out who controls the data lifecycle / protection. Yes, as the title says, I failed the VMCE exam this morning.69% out of 70% to pass.I want to share my mistakes so whoever reads this post will be able to do better:If you're a Windows sysadmin like me, don't leave anything related to the Linux world behind. Almost 1/3 of my questions were about Linux. So, it's really really important to have a complete knowledge at 360°.Memorize various options in menus, where it says and what it says.Don't just focus on Veeam Backup and Replication, look at all our other products as well.Very important are @haslund videos: not to get the answer, but how to get the anwser.
