VeeamON 2023 - Event Review

I have been a Veeam Vanguard for six years and Veeam Legend for just over a year and was fortunate enough to have attended the VeeamON 2017 event in New Orleans and VeeamON 2022 in Las Vegas, which was fantastic.  Being a Vanguard is a real honour, and many people ask me when they see my Veeam Vanguard jacket or shirt - What is Veeam?  My answer is a typical one - it is backup software for your infrastructure for now and the future, leading to a conversation around technology, backups, and many other things.This year's VeeamON 2023 event was in Miami, which I attended in person, and it was amazing.  Besides the great weather and hotel, there were many sessions, networking, a VeeamON playground with the Veeam Community Booth, Lab Warz, Hands-on-Labs and the legendary swag shop.Fontainebleau Miami Beach - Pool with VeeamON logo  VeeamON 2023 Digital Display in the lobbyAttending VeeamON is one of the best events if you want to learn more about backup and what Veeam is all about. backup and replication Job issue

hello, my problem is the following: I have a backup job scheduled at 5 p.m. and a continuous replication job on one of my virtual machines.  So it happens that the 2 tasks are done at the same time.  When that happens, my VM no longer works (it seems frozen, it can no longer be reached by ping, nor by remote desktop, the database it contains is no longer reachable either).  I am therefore obliged to stop one of the jobs.  help me please

Release licence for users in Veeam backup for Microsoft Office 365

I’d backed up some data for a group of users during a mail migration. The job is complete so I’ve deleted it all to free up the licenses for another job. Unfortunately I believe that I’ve done things in the wrong order. The repository has been deleted and now I can’t get “Remove-VBOLicensedUser”. For every user it outputs:“Remove-VBOLicensedUser : The process cannot access the file '\\10.1.1.1\office365backups\BackupName\Repository.xml' because it is being used by another process” The repository listed is nothing to do with these users and it’s not in user by any process that I can see - certainly openfiles is blank. Any idea how to proceed?

File Share vs Volume

If I’m creating a Windows backup, for a particular drive on a file server….is it best to create a File Share backup or a Volume level backup (essentially both backup the same set of files).  ie which is most efficient or recommended as a best practice?

Anyone have issues with Object Storage with Billions of Gets/Puts/Lists of small byte files from v12?

I am soliciting feedback from the community and Vanguards in Slack about an issue we are seeing so wanted to get feedback here also.Scenario - we have a customer using v12 with latest patches sending data to one of our DCs with Hitachi HCP Cloud Scale cluster which is very large.  They are sending over 20PB of data to us.Object Lock is turned on for some of the buckets and we are seeing billions of gets/puts/list commands which is causing havoc on the cluster worker nodes for HCPCS.The client has configured their jobs with the default block size of 1MB and we were thinking to change that to 4MB, but it would not make sense for 106-byte files.  That is the sizing of the files we are seeing the issue on for three buckets of which 2 of them are Windows servers and one is Linux.Any thoughts or has anyone run in to this before?  I am working with Veeam and Hitachi together as well but if this rings a bell for anyone your input would be great.Thanks.

Veeam Backup & Replication – Linux Agent Deployment & Management with Active Directory

I don’t like talking about a possible solution though until I’ve tried it for myself. This way I can gauge the problems that’ll occur by how I’ve tripped up in testing.This brings me to the topic of today, Linux + Veeam Backup & Replication Agent Management.Nowhere within Veeam’s documentation could I find references to what was/wasn’t supported for creating an Agent Protection Group. I see this as a potential risk, without stating which operating systems you can target via the mechanisms such as Computers from CSV file or Microsoft Active Directory Objects etc, how do you know if it will actually work? I could add IBM AIX servers to a CSV file, but that won’t work in reality as I’d need

Veeam on a Playstation 4? Why Not!

I’m going to preface this by saying, please please please, never try this in a production environment!!! But yes, it is technically possible to run Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Agent for Windows, Veeam Agent for Linux, and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 on a PlayStation 4 (PS4). ‘How?’ and ‘why?’ are the logical questions to ask at this point, so let’s take a quick look. The PS4 has been ‘jailbroken’ for some time, to the point that you can run Linux distributions on it, just like you used to be able to officially within the Playstation 3 era, for a while anyway before Sony removed the feature. A developer called Noob404 has released a PS4 port of Proxmox, the well known hypervisor platform, and has managed to successfully get Windows 10 to run on their PS4.As Windows 10 is a supported OS for many Veeam products, this does unintentionally enable their ability to run on a PS4! Based on AMD’s infamous FX series of CPUs & APUs, the PS4 has dual quad-core modules, allowing for

AMD EPYC ‘Rome’ Processors Can Crash after Nearly 3 Years Uptime

Hi everyone, I thought this was a good conversation point I wanted to share, as the more I thought about it, the more my thoughts on the subject changed. AMD have released an errata listing that details how their AMD EPYC Rome (7xx2) processors can, under specific conditions, crash. I’ve included the statement in its entirety below:I’m conflicted on this, my initial reaction was “wow they won’t fix this?!”, then I thought, well I guess it would involve a new stepping, and the chips were released in 2018, that’s not too unreasonable.The security conscious part of me thought, oh boy who isn’t patching their servers in nearly 3 years, but even that thought then pivoted to consider that actually with some of the live/hot patching options now available, OS-level patching is becoming less tied to a reboot. Restore only ACL from windows files without restoring files

hello, Small trick following a bad handling. The objective is to restore on a Windows file server the ACLs of the files without restoring the files.For this we will start by opening the console restore guest files. Once done, click on any file, then explore to find the path to the FLR mount.To get the list of ACLs you can run a single command. This command will save all subfolders and files as a plain text. The text file (acl.txt) will be saved on your current user folder.icacls c:data /save acl.txt /t /cWhere “C:data” is the FLR path, “T” is added to get all subfolders and files on that drive, and “C” allows to ignore all the access errors.If the number of folders and files are too large, then the command will take a long time to complete its execution. At the end of execution, you will get the list of total files which is processed successfully, and the number of files which don’t get success in processing.If you want to restore the lists, execute the following commandIcacls c: /rest

ReFS vs NTFS (or other)

Hey all. I haven’t yet pulled the plug as far as deploying ReFS on any of my Repos. Main reason initially was due to lack of stability I saw quite often in its early days. Other reason is I didn’t want to go through the hassle of creating a new Repo, then spending days migrating data here/there/everywhere. My NTFS has worked and done pretty well. The only fast clone storage I have implemented currently is with my Hardened Repo. Have had no issues there, but then again..XFS is a pretty mature FS 😊 .Anyway, I just want to ping the Community yet again to hear of any ‘gotchas’ which may be out there which may lead me to being *against* implementing ReFS in my Veeam environment. I’m on the verge of getting some shiney new Nimble arrays in for my backup storage, so when I get it connected, it would be a prime opportunity for me to implement ReFS if it is indeed now stable. I think my only concern maybe with doing restores, and rehydration of data? Do restores take a bit longer to do? Any in

My personal story about VeeamOn Miami 2023!

Hi Folks,I just wanted to share some of my experiences and thoughts after the trip, and sitting now and reflexing of them after a crazy week! (My Inbox was packed! as many of you I guess)Lucky me, I have the “privilege” to meet and flight with @jos.maliepaard  and @mkevenaar!We met in Madrid, and instantly starting chatting and discussing like we knew each other for some time! awesome!The flight was “looooong” and we made it to Miami evening, soo tired and hungry!Back to the hotel, we were not in the mood of having dinner, so we went for a couple of drinks after the check in! The days were great, the hotel had amazing pools, ambience, people around 24x7, and I started realizing were I was located at, Miami, Florida, USA!! Linux Server Management Options

Good day Community -With Linux being more prevalant in environments, including Veeam supporting Linux within its deployment components, it is a bit cumbersome to manage all these devices individually. So my question for the Community today is → what centralized management tool(s) do you use to manage your Linux server footprint?..to update, push scripts, monitor, etc? I’m needing to update & even push a script (change) out to our Linux servers and don’t want to touch all of them individually. Any info you can provide is greatly appreciated.I did a little bit of searching before posting and saw a tool called Landscape which looks promising, but don’t know anything about it & open to hear anyone’s experience with it...or again..any tool. Thanks in advance!

VeeamON 2023 How do you juggle your life, work, travel and study?

Hi Folks, One topic that I don’t think has been addressed or discussed is VeeamON in relation to all of our many duties and responsibilities. How do you fit it in? How do you deal with the extra stress levels? VeeamON was a success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended but we would be kidding ourselves if we thought that it did not add extra pressures in our daily lives. First of all some of us might have to convince the  bosses of this world that a trip to VeeamON is not, as the British would say just a “Jolly” i.e. vacation have fun only party. Yes we have fun but there is a lot of intense activity and knowledge transfer back and forth. I personally come out of VeeamON with my head exploding with new ideas and initiatives that I have gained from the sessions but even more from simple in person one on one conversations. Then there is the fact that no one is taking away the day job. Some of the folks there were having to simultaneously work during the conference or after hours. I
