How to setup file to tape for rotate of tapes to and from offside storage

Dear all,Apology I am a newbie here and my question may sound naive. We appreciate any help from your guys.We used Tivoli in the past to backup Oracle for both long term data keeping and DR. We created 3 sets of tapes. 2 sets would  be always in the tape library and one at remote site. Every 2 weeks we get back the offsite set and load it into library, and send one set of tapes to remote site for storage.Could you please give some idea how to set up file-to-tape job (let say daily full backup of Oracle) in Veeam in similar fashion? Our idea is to create a media pool with 3 media sets. One media set online for backup for 2 weeks, another offline in the tape library and one media set in the vault (to keep in remote site). And we will rotate in that way for every 2 weeks.Will that work? We value your input very much.Thank you.Hien

Trying to do bare metal restore of Windows server from one ESXi host to another.

I have a basic question. I am using VMWare ESXi Free license and the Free Veeam Backup. Was using just the Windows Agent for a long time but am now using the Backup and Recovery 12. I have an OLD ESXi host running a Windows 2012 Essentials server, and a new ESXi host I am transferring it to for legacy purposes. For Testing I originally just copied the Virtual Machine files to the new box, registered the VM and that worked. When I finally decided to actually move the machine I tested by restoring a backup from Veeam windows agent to the VM as a bare metal recovery. This worked the first time, and the second time. I was testing on the weekends after hours so there was a week between. The next week I decided to actually do it following the procedure that had been successful previously. The restore said it completed successfully, but the server would not boot normally and went to the Recovery Console. It apparently had problems with the active directory database.I tried this several more t

VB365 V7/7a - There is an error in XML document

Just a heads up for a hotfix to VB365.We recently faced multiple errors within our MSP stack for VB365:Processing mailbox xyz failed with error: There is an error in XML document (1, 5332).. The specified type was not recognized: name='SharingMessage' Turned out to be a problem introduced by some changes Microsoft applied to M365.Veeam published a hotfix just a few days later: https://www.veeam.com/kb4527It’s applicable to the most recent version of 7 (7.0.0.4388) as well as 7a (7.1.0.1301) and I can confirm it to solve the issue.You have to stop all services and replace Veeam.Ews.dll in 4 different locations.Make sure to rename or copy the files to be replaced beforehand and have or create a backup of the VB365 system.

Veeam Remote SQL Database Restore as SQL Agent job

I have several SQL jobs that currently perform nightly (or weekly) restores of a production database on other servers.  Since we have now migrated to the Veeam Backup and Replication solution, I am trying to accomplish these same tasks within the Veeam environment.  (BTW, we are on Veeam version 11.)  I set up the Veeam PowerShell environment as described here https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/powershell/getting_started.html?ver=110#remote and wrote a script to perform a database restore (see attached).I ran the script interactively within a PowerShell session and it completed successfully.  I ran it again as a Windows Scheduled Task and it worked.  However, I can’t get it to run as a SQL Server Agent job. Here’s the error message that I’m receiving:The term 'Start-VESQLRestoreSession' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.Sinc

Backup to Vultr object storage

SOBR placement policy not adhered to - solution included

This issue I’ve seen with larger SOBRs having many ReFS extents. Having a backup-copy job (pruning) with GFS there were sudden unintended switches of backup chains to other extents. Thus loosing all space efficiency for the GFS points. We used scripts here to detect chains spanning more than a single extent. It turned out to be a bug solved in V10 paired with a very conservative process in VBR to detect extents near space exhaustion. There is some estimation here due not being able to estimate the space savings due to block recloning. This could be tweaked with two regkeys:Pfad: HKLM\Software\Veeam\Veeam Backup and ReplicationName: SOBRSyntheticFullCompressRate Value: 35, DWORDDescription: override the estimated space VM would take on SOBR in a full backup. % of previous full backup size.  Name: SobrForceExtentSpaceUpdateValue: 1, DWORDDescription: enables advanced SOBR extents free space update logic. Backup file version mismatch: scale-out backup repository rescan is required.

Since upgrading to V12 VeeamBR (and having to revert to a snapshot due to critical error) I get this on every SOBR tier job. I have rescanned both the hypervs as well as the azure blob then ran tier job now but still get the same error every time  Backup file version mismatch: scale-out backup repository rescan is required.

[Quicktip] Failed Veeam Backup&Replication Upgrade

Recently I had problems by upgrading Veeam from 9.5U4 to v10. Upgrade process failed after a while. We found out, directory C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup lost its permissions. We had no change any more to enter this directory. Short answer: Antivirus software causes the problem. After disabling real-time scan, upgrade run without further issues. Antivirus software was configured according Veeam best practices.

Improvement Idea: SureBackup & Pre/Post Repositories

Hey, Don’t know about you guys but I feel Veeam are missing what could be a very successful trick here with their SureBackup and Pre/Post Processing script functionalities. I know we have VeeamHub for some PowerShell scripts but I think to really push the value of Veeam integrating into our customers’ enterprise application stacks it would be great to have a more direct interface of getting scripts into Veeam. I’ve seen plenty of systems integrating “stores” or other web fronts to enable simple access. It’d be great to see ways of integrating with systems that have been seen as “traditionally” unfriendly to snapshoting and also to validate more complex workloads.I’m sure there are plenty of great scripts out there that just aren’t being shared due to lack of visibility of the existing platforms but driving it into the client would really improve feature take up. That’s my opinion anyway, how do you all feel about this? Moving backups to archive tier

We have an onpremise Veeam server that runs the following jobs:1. Backup to local storage (weekly full, daily incrementals)2. Copy job to Linux hardened repository (immutable)3. Copy job to Azure Blob cool storage (immutable)Now i would like to have the Azure monthly backups moved to archive tier. I'm assuming i have to use SOBR for this. The following question arise:i create a second immutable repository with longer immutability, say 1 year. After moving the full backup, will it calculate ‘initial backup date + 1 year’, or ‘SOBR copy date + 1 year’? do i need a new container for this or can i just create a folder within a container? if a backup is still immutable can it be moved to the archive tier? copying backups obviously generates a large amount of traffic. Download backup from one repository, upload to another. Is there something i can do to limit the amount of traffic and costs? what's the risk here? To move data the local Veeam server needs to have modify permissions in both th

Wordpress Backup to Wasabi

FYI, for those of you with WordPress sites (looking at you Vanguards, but I’m sure there are others), I came across a nice plugin for backing up to Wasabi.  This isn’t really Veeam specific at all, but I figured I’d share anyway.You can find a WordPress plugin called backWPup and create a Wasabi bucket and point the plugin to backup there.  Wasabi actually has a page dedicated to it, but honestly, it was so easy to setup, it was probably unnecessary.  It can of course backup to FTP, Dropbox, Google drive and such like most apps, and there are probably other plugins that do this as well, but since a lot of folks have Wasabi accounts already, I figured it might be helpful for others if they don’t already have something in place.https://wasabi-support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001900632-How-do-I-use-BackWPup-with-Wasabi-

There are two critical CVEs that affect Veeam Backup & Replication and account for two of the three critical Veeam Backup & Replication CVEs, and the most serious of the products affected. How to modify vCloud URL in Veeam

Restore only ACL from windows files without restoring files

hello, Small trick following a bad handling. The objective is to restore on a Windows file server the ACLs of the files without restoring the files.For this we will start by opening the console restore guest files. Once done, click on any file, then explore to find the path to the FLR mount.To get the list of ACLs you can run a single command. This command will save all subfolders and files as a plain text. The text file (acl.txt) will be saved on your current user folder.icacls c:data /save acl.txt /t /cWhere “C:data” is the FLR path, “T” is added to get all subfolders and files on that drive, and “C” allows to ignore all the access errors.If the number of folders and files are too large, then the command will take a long time to complete its execution. Will using jumbo frames help VBR 12 performance?

In my environment, all of my switches and all of my virtualization hosts support jumbo frames. as well as the Data Domain that is my storage infrastructure.  However, my VBR environment - 3VMs (the VBR server, 1 proxy, and 1 managed server used to mount restores) and the physical server that attaches to the tape library are not currently set to use jumbo frames. I am wondering if setting them to use jumbo frames would help, improve performance, reduce bottlenecks?I can’t imagine that it would hurt, right?Anyone using jumbo frames? What is your experience?

Veeam backup for Azure failed to backup a VM to Azure repository

Hi, we have Veeam backup for Azure all setup and running and its been a couple of months. We have private network deployment with private endpoints in our environment with premium service bus and all subnets are allowed to access this service bus. We have 5 backup policies in total, 3 of them have been running fine but 2 of the jobs (with our file servers), the snapshots are running fine but the backup policy is getting failed after 4/5 hours of the session run with an error :Failed to perform backup of vm1 to Production Backups Repo 1. Worker VBA-5bf0973a-8e2c-4dda-ba63-28814324c1bb: getting of the job status failed (trace ID: b8b3fb4e-c7f0-4f86-aa22-4f2122f45b00)We have noticed that when the backup policy session starts, it backs up the data all the way to 60% percent and then it stuck for a very long time before erroring out this message. We have raised a support case with Veeam and they said they will need to check with their R&D team, as we have the same settings for all jobs
