Start Backup when USB drive is inserted

Hi, I vaguely recall seeing an option where a backup job is automatically started when a USB drive containing a backup repository is plugged into the server.  I can’t seem to find it again…was I dreaming?Thanks, Hammer

VMCA exam personal experience

Hi allFinally previous week I took the time to perform the new VMCA 2022 exam, this to extend my Veeam Architect certificate (VMCA-1) to an up-to-date status. This just before the summer holidays 😎.Previously (7 months ago) I wrote another post regarding my personal experience for the VMCE 2021 exam (VMCE exam personal experience | Veeam Community Resource Hub).I know that @Michael Melter already wrote a great post about his VMCA 2022 exam review, but next to that nice post, I want to add my own personal experience and recommendations 😉. I will use the same content as I used before in my VMCE post 🤗. Requirement : Taking an official 2-days VMCA course is a requirement before taking the VMCA exam.Before (in Version 1 of VMCA) you had to be VMCE-certified before you could take the exam of VMCA.That requirement is no longer valid.BUT, I strongly recommend being VMCE of the same version first before taking the VMCA exam.In my opinion, the requirement of being a VMCE should still exist.I

Favourite 12.1 Features

Just a short post today - I cherry picked a couple of my favourite features of 12.1. There were so many to choose from, but the features I love best in new releases are often the big heroes that hide in the shadows.  Maintenance mode enhancements — running Cloud Connect Replication jobs and Cloud Connect CDP policies will now be stopped gracefully and prevented from starting automatically for the duration of the maintenance mode. This one has long been a thorn for us Service Providers. You put the environment into maintenance mode, but replicas continue to come through. I’m excited to see this new feature being implemented! Now maintenance on CC environments are going to be much less troublesome! PostgreSQL database support — following multiple optimizations and QA testing, starting from v12.1 we’re removing the previous recommendation not to use PostgreSQL as a configuration database for  Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructures.Huge feature here! No longer will we be chained to expensive

VeeamON 2023

What an event! I will admit I was slightly nervous about attending my first VeeamON. From not knowing what to wear, looking at the heat and temperature for the week or what to expect.  My flight there only had a 30 minute layover which was a bit concerning as well. After getting swindled at the airport for a “TAXI” when the guy clearly took me in a Mercedes SUV, I sucked it up and paid the large fair and arrived at a beautiful hotel. (I knew the second I got in and he stepped on the gas it was going to be expensive lol)  The SUV was quite nice and he got me there quick but that hurt the wallet pretty bad. I quickly installed Uber for the rest of the trip.  The view from my room was better than expected and I wandered around by the pool and had a great meal at La Cote.  I believe this was the night Chris took me to CVS to get some snacks which was good as I didn’t have any clue where I was going and most likely wasn’t going to wander off solo.  Day 2 I had a coffee at the hotel and real

Veeam Management Agent on VBR server

Hi Folks, I am back into the wild and wonderful world of Veeam Service Provider Console after a brief sojourn. I wanted to see if there is a quick answer to this and if my old solution perhaps has a better one now.I have a VBR that is connected to the Service Provider and all backup copy jobs are working fine. In VSPC the company is smiling with a happy green Healthy! However, at the VBR level the when pressing the Management Agent icon it complains that is connecting, and can’t connect after rolling through all the gateways. I tried running through the SP properties again but no luck. Is it time to un-install the pesky agent and redeploy? The ClientAgent_error, Communication and ClientAgent logs have things like CloudGate “No such host is known” and “Endpoint Hanshake Failed” and The write operation failed, see inner exception. ---> System.TimeoutException: Could not finish read operation in timely manner.Now could this be that if they have running backups and have used up the Tena

Veeam on workgroup with domain shares

Anyone have insight into restoring files to a domain share when all Veeam components are in a dedicated workgroup? When we rebuilt our environment we made the choice to go workgroup vs. management domain (or primary domain). Little did we know at the time this was going to cause some headache restoring files back to our domain file share. We were under the impression the restore process would use the same account it used to back the data up but apparently it does not work this way (unless we’re missing something). Our current workaround is to restore this to a directory on the management server and then move it to the domain file share with an appropriately privileged user account. Not ideal but for smaller restores it’s working.

Ok need help here. ZERTO VS VEEAM CDP

Hi Folks, I am making a plan to try and get Veeam CDP introduced. I have used Zerto but have only used Veeam CDP in labs so far. Does anyone here have production experience with both? I am not looking for a “just boost Veeam” answer 😁. I love Veeam but honesty is always best so if there a things that still need working on with Veeam CDP no issues.

Wow Memory Lane VeeamON 2017

Hi Everyone, As always after a move I was going through old stuff and found my lucky winner post from 2017. At the time on the Veeam Forums there was a contest to win a trip to VeeamON 2017 in New Orleans.. I was not sure whether to post or not. Warning: Nothing to Process (RMAN Backup)!

Hi All,I know that his topic has been discussed before in the community but I tried all what mentioned on those topics but it did not work.I checked that Veeam Agent for Linux is installed also the Oracle Plugin installed too but when I do application backup (RMAN) via the VBR console I’ve got the warning “Nothing to process” It is also added to managed Linux and added to Protection GroupFrom Oracle Linux all the required packages and component are installed also I removed it and uninstall the agent and plugin and reinstall it and re scan it many times and got the same thing.Is there a missing thing ? Thanks in advanced for your  help and support

Don't post brain dumps

Folks, Please don’t post brain dumps. You are not only cheating the system but also yourselves. I have had to deal with paper cert folks and believe me they don’t last long. The exam and the piece of paper are not the point. It is the process and the knowledge that is what you want. At 1 am when sitting there clueless on a severity 1 call your brain dumps will be of no use. cheers

Will using jumbo frames help VBR 12 performance?

In my environment, all of my switches and all of my virtualization hosts support jumbo frames. as well as the Data Domain that is my storage infrastructure.  However, my VBR environment - 3VMs (the VBR server, 1 proxy, and 1 managed server used to mount restores) and the physical server that attaches to the tape library are not currently set to use jumbo frames. I am wondering if setting them to use jumbo frames would help, improve performance, reduce bottlenecks?I can’t imagine that it would hurt, right?Anyone using jumbo frames? What is your experience?

decrease Oracle RMAN backup window

Hello Everyone,I have a challenge in decreasing the backup window for 60TB Oracle DB which takes 16 hours with transfer rate 1GB/s against Networker which takes only 10 hours.Current configuration VBR v12, Oracle RMAN plugin with 10 channels, Veeam basic compression, SOBR Repo performance mode with 10 NFS shares on Pure storage, gateway server auto.Network speed 40GB with jumpo frame enabled.

Beware of your worst enemy EGO

Hi Folks, Off topic but I think worth mentioning. I had a discussion with a fellow presenter at KubeHuddle this weekend. This person has achieved a lot more than me in the Kubernetes and IT world and I have a genuine respect for them. What struck me during our conversation was an apparent lack of ego in my partner’s interactions. There was not even the slightest nuance of bragging or self aggrandisement. At one point I said “you must be very proud about having achieved so much”. To my great surprise the response was very placid. “only the insecure and fools make great importance of their achievements, a bucket that is empty is easily filled with any liquid until it overflows, but a pipe conducts the liquid through and the liquid does not spill, be the pipe not the bucket”I put down the response to the person coming from a very different cultural background than mine. After all I grew up in the Canadian/American “push push, go  harder harder, work more more, stand above the rest culture

rotated repo retention

Hello, I am new to using Veeam and in my small laboratory I am testing rotating disks :I have a retention policy of 21 and I have 3 disks (one per week) : If I understand correctly it would be 7 per disk The question is: if I use Forever Forward Incremental when the disk already has 7 points and I connect it again, will it merge the old incremental and save only full backup? Thanks

Issue with NAS backup to object storage at iDRIVE

Hi guysI’m having a problem that I can’t seem to resolve.Perhaps someone already have had the same error or experience.Environment :It’s not on a production environment, but on my personal lab I’m using NAS backup of a big file-share to an on-premise repository without any issues I’m using a secondary copy of this backup to another repository without any issues I want to have next to that also a secondary copy of this backup to object storage in the cloudSince version 12 of VBR that is possible, before it was only possible to use object storage for the archive backup of a NAS-backup.I’m having an account at iDRIVE for E2 Immutable object storage.With that latest copy I’m having an issue that I can’t seem to resolve.Because it’s on my lab with my NFR license, I can’t create a support case for this 🤣 Issue : The job start, but after a while I’m getting the following error :  HTTP exception: WinHttpReceiveResponse_callback_timeout: 12152: The server returned an invalid or unrecognized re

Slow backup problem

I’m testing the Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition on 2 Windows 10 Pro PCs, connected with Gigabit Ethernet.  Everything’s functional.  With no throttling, backup read speed fluctuates between around 60Mb/s and 140Mb/s (note - when the read speed was around 77Mb/s, network usage shown in Task Manager on the server computer for Veeam Agent was around 940Mb/s).  But browsers and email applications on the client computer become unresponsive at times.  Setting throttling (via a Network Traffic Rule on the server) to 50Mb/s fixed the unresponsiveness problem.  But with the throttling, backup read speed dropped drastically, hovering between 1Mb/s and 5Mb/s.  I got the same result after disabling firewall and antiVirus on both computers. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to track down the cause of this problem?
